This past week Gulliver Swim Club had four athletes, Miguel Cancel, Nick Carter, Kelly Fertel, and Niki Urquidi, compete at the U.S. Olympic Swimming Trials in Omaha, Nebraska. Olympic Trials features the top 1% of all registered USA Swimming members. Kelly Fertel competed in her first Olympic Trials qualifying in the 400 IM and the 200 IM. Kelly had great swims posting a 4:55.50 in the 400 IM finishing 57th overall. Two days later, Kelly swam the 200 IM finishing 69th overall with a time of 2:19.74. Next, we had Niki Urquidi competing in her first Olympic Trials qualifying in the 400 freestyle. Niki showed her toughness and battled through her race finishing in a time of 4:24.57, placing 95th overall. Next, on the guy’s side, we had Nick Carter compete in his first Olympic Trials qualifying in the 100 and 200 backstrokes. Nick swam a great 100 backstroke finishing with a time of 57.32, right on his personal best time. Two days later, Nick swam the 200 backstroke in a time of 2:05.51 placing him 88th overall. Miguel Cancel, swimming in his first Olympic Trials, qualified in the 400 IM. Miguel had an impressive race finishing with a personal best time of 4:26.65, moving up in rank to finish 33rd overall. Miguel then swam the 200 IM in a time trial, recording a personal best time of 2:06.69. Olympic Trials was a great experience for the athletes as well as the coaches. Olympic Trials is deemed one of the fastest meets in the world with the best of the best competing in their best events for an opportunity to represent the USA. Our athletes can now say they competed with the best of best.
