Hello Rice Aquatic Families,
We’re happy to announce that Gulf Swimming is putting on a stroke and turn clinic for prospective officials at UH on Saturday, April 8. This is only a 1 hour clinic, plus some online training, in order to start the process of becoming a USA Swimming certified official.
As our club grows, it’s a good practice to increase certified officials within our club. This helps our club stabilize and solidify its member base and involvement within the sport, which ultimately serves the athletes with more competitive opportunity. Translation – our club can do more intra-squad, dual, tri, or invitational meets to serve our members, and we don’t have to rely on other clubs to supply officials, or solely rely on larger open meets for our competitive needs. Currently, our club is around 250 athletes; we have 5 registered officials to our club, but only 2 of which have athletes on our team.
From a coaches perspective, the parent who volunteers and invests their time as an official will better understand the coach-athlete relationship and athlete development within the sport. It’s an entirely new side of the sport that can be very rewarding. The Gulf officials chair, Andrea Walin, has streamlined this process very much and has been a great person to serve as our officials chair.
If you have questions regarding the officiating process or responsibilities, you’re welcome to speak to Carol Nielsen or Gerald Lewis. They are both officiate regularly and would be happy to help you out if interested. Rice Aquatics does pay for officials registration each year they register with Rice.
