Lakewood Aquatics youngsters showcase their talent at the Speedo Grand Challenge in Irvine:
The Speedo Grand Challenge is an innovative swim meet that offers a unique opportunity for elite swimmers of all ages. Some examples include the top seeded athlete spinning a wheel to determine the amount of the cash prize the winner will receive (this entices several professional swimmers to attend), the final heat is only 4 swimmers instead of the usual 8, and the meet includes events for swimmers in the 11-12 age group – exposing them to warming-up and competing with some of the best swimmers in the world.
Lakewood Aquatics sent 10 swimmers to compete over the Memorial Day weekend, and the 12 & under swimmers came to race! The prelims in the morning yield the finals at night where the top 6 swimmers race for position, prizes, and pride. It is quite an accomplishment to qualify as one of the top 6 swimmers in Southern California, and Lakewood had three in the finals heats.
Jonathan Vet dropped over half a second in the 50 breast and finished 6th with a time of :36.00
Iris Bayan dropped over 2.5 seconds in the 100 fly to finish 2nd with a time of 1:09.54
Reese Veron dropped 2 seconds in the 100 fly to finish 3rd in a time of 1:09.67, and shaved 1.5 seconds off her best in the 50 fly to finish in 2nd place with a :30.74
Congratulations Coach Keith, Reese, Iris, and Jonathan. We are proud of you!
