The Missoula Aquatic Club placed sixth at the Spring Senior Sectionals swim meet last month to post its highest finish in team history.

MAC took 18 swimmers to Federal Way, Washington for the major meet that featured 123 teams from 11 western states. More than 800 total swimmers attended the event that was held March 16-19 and more than 150 competitors were entered in each race. The top 32 from each advanced to the finals.

A total of 15 Montana state records were broken at the meet, including five alone in the boys' relay events. The MAC relay teams placed 12th or higher in the 800 freestyle, 400 freestyle, 200 freestyle, 400 medley and 200 medley races. The team of Cale Berkoff, Adam Zimmer, Darragh Mahns and Dylan Faust swam to fourth place in the 200-yard medley.


Katharine Berkoff had the best individual meet. She won the 200 backstroke to go with a silver in the 100 back. She also placed third in the 200 individual medley, fourth in the 200 free, 11th in the 100 free and 15th in the 50 free.

Adam Zimmer had the next-best finish with a fourth in the 200 breaststroke. He added a ninth-place honor in the 100 breast while also swimming 18th in the 200 back, 17th in the 400 IM and 20th in the 100 back.

Cale Berkoff was close behind with a fifth in the 200 backstroke. He was also eighth in the 100 back and 26th in the 100 free.


Mari Aoki swam to sixth place in the 200 IM and had a pair of seventh-place finishes in the 200 back and 400 IM. She also placed 26th in the 100 breast.

Distance swimmer Gabby Smart took 12th in the 1,650 free and 18th in the 500. Matthew Fritz was 19th in the boys' 200 back while Jessie Ecklund was 23rd in the girls' 200 back, and Mahns was 27th in the 200 free.

The top girls' relay finish for MAC was the 800 freestyle in which Aoki, Ecklund, Smart and Katharine Berkoff combined to take seventh. They placed 22nd or better in four other relay events.
