Sam Coufal Sets Two Team Records as 12-Unders Sizzle at State

Congratulations to the 12-Under State Championship Team on a great effort last weekend.  Overall the team finished in 6th place, just 7.5 points out of 5th.  The kids swam great with more than 90 lifetime bests throughout the meet.  The 732 points scored is 246 more than last summer’s team and the most since scoring 758 in 2013.

11-12 Boys - 7th place

Scoring was led by Sam Coufal who racked up 102 individual points, tying him for third place in the 11-12 boys high-point battle.  Sam was a two-time champion, winning the 50 breast and 50 fly in dominating wire-to-wire victories.  The two swims were team records.  His 50 breast time of 35.07 tied a 25-year-old record.  His 50 fly time of 30.18 bested a 7-year-old mark by a little more than a tenth of a second.  In addition to the two gold medal performances Sam was 2nd in the 100 breast, 3rd in the 50 free, 4th in the 200 breast and 5th in the 50 back.  Tyler Hansen also made his way to the podium with a 5th place finish in the 50 breast.  Other individual point scorers were Cooper Wisener with an 11th in the 50 breast and 12th in the 200 breast and Adam Skrzeszewski who was 13th in the 50 back and 100 fly and 16th in the 50 fly.  Matthew Vayts competed individually in three events and chipped in with some big point-scoring relay swims and Lucas Gigot went best times in all three of his breaststroke events.

10-Under Boys – 3rd place

The team’s other state champion was Tanner Hansen who won the 10-under boys 50 breaststroke.  Tanner was also on the awards podium for the 100 breast, 3rd place, and 50 free, 5th place.  He also scored points in his other three events bring his meet total 76, 8th best in the 10-under boys high-point.  Andrew Harshbarger stood on the 6th place platform of the podium for his 50 fly performance.  He also scored with a 9th in the 100 fly and a 15th in the 50 free.  Braeden Hansen added points with an 11th in the 50 breast and a 16th in the 100 breast.  Adam Anderson went best times in all three of his individual events and swam a great relay leg with Andrew, Tanner and Gavin Dai on the 6th place 200 free relay.  Dwayne Wang joined Andrew, Tanner and Braeden on a 2nd place 200 medley relay.

10-Under Girls – 7th place

Leading our 10-under girls was Audrey Worgull with 40 points, 15th overall in the 10-Under girls.  Her top finish was 2nd place in the 400 freestyle.  She also reached the podium in the 100 back with an 8th place finish and scored points in the 50 breast, 10th, 200 free, 14th, and 50 back, 15th.  Sara Wiedoff scored 4 times with a 10th in the 50 breast, 12th in the 50 fly, 13th in the 100 fly and 15th in the 200 IM.  Allison Lucyshyn added a 9th place finish in the 400 free as well.  Grace Kaczmarek combined with Audrey, Sara and Allison for a 2nd and 6th place relay finishes.  Also competing at the meet were Allison Gordon, Ava Hansen, Izzy Cera, Ella Janiszewski, Kate Lucyshyn, Piper Moede and Cate Wisener.

11-12 Girls – 6th place

Every 11-12 girls contributed points in the meet, either as a relay or individual swimmer.  The 11-12 girls age group was led by Hailey Tierney who reached the awards podium in all three of her backstroke events with a 5th in the 200, and a 7th in the 50 and 100.  Francesca Smith scored thrice with a 12th in the 100 free, a 13th in the 50 fly and a 14th in the 50 free.  Zoe Cera was 13th in the 100 free and 16th in the 400 free.  Maryclaire Kopfer also scored twice with a 12th in the 50 free and a 14th in the 50 back.  Paige Dulski and Danielle Stemper added points with 15th place finishes in the 50 fly and 400 IM respectively.  Combining with the aforementioned swimmers to score points on relays were Kyla Moore, Makenna Gardner, and Brooklyn Campbell.

Central Zone Championship Meet

Nine Lake Country swimmers will move on to compete at the next level as members of Team Wisconsin at the Central Zone Championships taking on all-star teams from Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Oklahoma and Lake Erie (Northern Ohio).  Advancing swimmers are Sam Coufal, Tyler Hansen, Tanner Hansen, Andrew Harshbarger, Hailey Tierney, Zoe Cera, Francesca Smith, MaryClaire Kopfer and Audrey Worgull.  The Meet is this Thursday through Sunday at the Pleasant Prairie RecPlex.
