Two of our swimmers joined some of the top swimmers in the northeast this past week, competing at the Eastern Zones Senior Championships at the Burt Flickinger Athletic Center in Buffalo, NY. Swimmers’ ages ranged from 14-32 years old and included club and collegiate swimmers from Maine to Maryland.
Samantha Russell and Jake Riva made us proud as the announcer bellowed “...from the North Jersey Barracudas!” from the natatorium’s PA system throughout the 4 day meet. Both swimmers did fantastic.
Qualifying in 4 events, Sam started Wednesday’s prelims off with great swims in her 200 IM finishing 66 of 76, while swimming a Career Best. She followed that up with another top swim in her 100 Breast, finishing 40 of 61. She returned with a vengeance on Sunday, earning Career Bests in both the 50 Free and 200 Breast; dropping nearly 6 seconds, and narrowly missing a spot in finals.
Jake hit the water in Thursday’s prelims earning Career Bests in his 200 IM (over a 10 second drop) and 100 Free, and followed Friday with 200 Free and 100 Fly. He had something to prove on Saturday’s Prelims, dropping almost 2 seconds in his 100 Back to earn a trip to finals Saturday night. Only one of three 15 year olds in the top 32, he swam past competitors to a 24th finish. Sunday’s 50 Free and 200 Back swims resulted in another top time and impressive finishes.
Both swimmers, their families, and coaches even enjoyed a little down-time at Niagara Falls and area attractions between sessions!
All in all, both of our young Barracudas swam incredibly well as they faced off against some of the northeast’s stiffest competition and earned Career Best Times and impressive finishes in the process. Congrats Sam and Jake!
