Thirty swimmers traveled to Paducah, KY, last weekend for the first short course meet of the 2017-18 season. RCA swimmers shined as the work put in over the summer and in the early season truly became evident. It was quite impossible for Coach Lindsay to choose a single Swimmer of the Meet, so the following are some of the highlights from this terrific meet.
RCA had several swimmers in their first USA meet ever: Joe Burton, Tim Burton, Andres Acevedo (his first meet ever, AAU or USA), Annie McDougal, Luke Underwood, Nattie Underwood, Noah Underwood, Roman Underwood, Natalie Voshage, and Lana Woolard. These swimmers did an excellent job learning the ropes of year-round swimming, posted first-ever times, and as a group had very few DQs. Joe Burton even qualified for Division I Championships already for 13-14 boys 50 free!
Many of the first-timers came from the Bronze group, but other notable swims from Bronze include Anthony Cugini's 8-second drop in the 100 free and 4-second drop in 50 back; and Kenyan Kelpe's 26-second drop in the 100 IM and 15-second drop in the 50 breast.
In Silver we had some great performances by Kaiden Cracraft, Avery Criblez, Hudson Dennis, Kennedy Ringwald, Kent Sheridan, Lilly Stempkovski, and Ty Thomas. Cracraft earned BB times in every event he swam and is pretty close to some A times as well. Criblez had huge time drops in every event, including an 18-second drop in the 200 free! Dennis got his first ever BB time in the 50 free and is now qualified for Division I Champs! Ringwald got B times in 4 events and dropped almost 9 seconds in the 100 free and 7 in the 50 breast in a tight race. Sheridan qualified for Division I Champs in the 10&under boys 50 back and is very close to many other cuts (he dropped loads of time and has B times in everything he swam). Stempkovski qualified for Champs in both 50 and 100 breast and is very close in the 100 back (13-second drop) and 100 IM (11-second drop) as well. In addition to winning 8&under boys high point from the meet, Thomas posted 5 Division I qualifying times and one A time (50 fly), which qualifies him for the A Champs in November too!
Gold swimmers were electric this meet. Addison Ringwald had some great swims, including 7-and-6-second drops in the 100 free and 100 breast, respectively. Sydney Ringwald won 10&under girls high point and posted 1 BB time, 6 A times, and 1 AA time. She also broke four RCA team records! Elias Theall posted 100% best times, including several double-digit time drops and a 1-minute 24-second drop in the 1000 free. Theall also stood out by way of team spirit and encouragement toward others. He was constantly giving high fives to all swimmers, cheering for RCA swimmers during their races, and giving "pep talks" behind the blocks. He did this through all sessions of the meet over the three days. Phineas Theall was the 10&under boys high point winner and also got all best times: two BB times, two A times, and five AA times! Nate Thomas was 100% best times at this meet and broke 30 seconds in the 50 free to get an A time, earned four AA times, and three AAA times (100 IM, 100 back, 100 breast). Ava Walters qualified for Division I Champs in everything she swam and also qualified for A Champs in four events (50 free, 50 fly, 50 back, and 100 back).
Way to go, swimmers! What a fantastic way to kick off the short course season!
