Great Swims at Holiday Classic

In what has become the premier mid-season meet for the region’s finest swimmers, athletes from across New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and New York went head-to-head at Rutgers University for the 31st Annual Holiday Classic, hosted by Eastern Express. There were hundreds of swimmers from 46 different teams competing. Just qualifying for this meet (and getting in) is notable.

Our 7 qualifying attendees had an amazing weekend. This crew brought our up-and-coming team much recognition with 5 appearances in Finals, 26 Gold times swum, a few Sectional times swum, a Futures* cut, 20 Career Best Times, and a slew of new Team Records.

With some events boasting 100+ swimmers, NJB grabbed a few top 16 scoring places. Sam Russell had a great weekend, making Finals in the 100 Breast and finishing 9th overall. Of her 6 Gold Times (NJ Swimming Senior Championships*), two of them were Eastern Zone Speedo Sectional* qualifying times! Jake Riva also had awesome performances making finals in the 100 Back, 100 Free, 200 IM, and 50 Free. With all 9 swims Gold times, he also earned Sectional cuts in his events, and even a Futures* time in his 100 Back. Both have also qualified for the Meet of Champions (high school) with Jake’s swims in the 100 Back, 100 Free, 200 Free, 200 IM, and 50 Free; and Sam’s 100 Breast and 100 Free times.

Other JO/Senior Championships* times were earned by Andrea Carlson (100 Back), Jillian Berg (50, 100, 200 Free & 200 IM), Jordan Maruska (50, 100, 200, 1000 Free & 100 Breast), and Christopher Gutierrez (50 Free).

The NJB ‘ Record board’ has been reworked with 14 new Team Records! Congratulations to Chris Gutierrez (50 Free), Jordan Maruska (100 Free, 200 Free, 1000 Free, 100 Breast), Sam Russell (50 Free, 100 Free, 100 Breast), Andrea Carlson (100 Back), and Jake Riva (50 Free, 100 Free, 200 Free, 100 Back, 200 IM)!

And there were a ton of other great swims, including 20 Career Best Times, proving these guys are still getting faster!
