Southern Alberta Provincials - Day 1 Report

25 February 2018 (Calgary, AB) - Southern Alberta Provincials Day 1 Results were smoking’ at the pool with a number of new top-times from everyone across the board.

100 Free was the first event up in the morning session with Caleb Gaine crushing the field in a lifetime best time win in 1:00.52 - a best time by two seconds.

Our next winner came in the girls 200IM as Madilyn Connell put together a 4-stroke mash up to win the girls 10&U title with a 3:07.26.

Addison Butler dropped a whopping 22 seconds in his 200m butterfly event to be our next event winner taking the boys 13 years-old category - final time 2:33.47. This win adds to his record breaking performance the other weekend at the Pugsley’s plunge where he took down a provincial record & Cole Pratt’s old club record in the boys 50m butterfly short course - going 28.63!

In the next event, the girls 50m backstroke, young 13 year-old Payton Kelly was on point with her 31.44 victory in the race.

Kadin Werner Enns took his first win of the day in the boys 50m backstroke with a strong start to win the 12 years-old category in 33.06.

In the distance event for the session, the 800m freestyle, brand new 13 year-old swimmer (he just aged up) Addison Butler took another win dropping 30 seconds off of his entry time to go 9:41.47. Teammate, Sebastian Cariaga took the win in the boys 15 years-old category with a 9:28.87 swim.

The meet has a unique format consisting of two timed finals sessions each day -with different events in each of the two sessions AM & PM. This is done with the though of promoting fast one-off swimming with an idea that it will keep swimmers from floating or cruising the prelims when they know the medals, and times are on the line at night in finals. Is is effective? Time will tell as not all subscribe to that view point.

100m backstroke, the first event up in the second session of the day, saw Kadin once again post a new lifetime best time taking the 100m event in 1:09.39. Two backstroke events in the bag - you’ll have to tune in tomorrow to see if he made it a clean sweep!

Madilyn Connell crushed the old club record held by Samantha Wong in the second session of the day with her win in the girls 50m breaststroke taking a full second off her best time and the old record in 39.31.

In the 100m butterfly 12 year-old Devon Angus dropped a full-second to go 1:13.95 and take the provincial championship title.

Addison Butler added one more provincial title to his victory belt in the 100m butterfly dropping nearly 8 full-seconds to win in 1:06.91.

The 400m freestyle, one of Cascade perennial best events, saw 11 year-old Keira Kennedy lead the gold medal charge with her win in 5:17.37 - a new lifetime best for her. Taking the cue from his younger teammate, 12 year-old Kadin Werner Enns, took the title for the 400m free for the boys in 4:45.11 while his teammate, Caleb Gaine, despite some math problems at the end of the race took the boys 13 year-old title in 4:52.75. Another victory in the 400 free came from Will Bissett taking gold in the 14&O category with his solid 4:26.85.

It was a pretty solid day for your Cascade crew which saw them take a number of wins across the board. The success of the meet is not only in the gold medal or medal count but at this level seeing the kids going best times, try new strategies, maintain proper technique and above all else learn from their swims to be even better the next time out. So far, it has been a big success - tune in for more later!
