Letter to Athletes

General Chairs: The below message was sent to all athlete representative attendees at the 2017 USA Swimming Convention. If you have an athlete representative in your LSC that did not attend convention, we would greatly appreciate you forwarding this message along to them. Thank you.

Good morning LSC and national committee athlete representatives, At this point, I’m sure you’ve seen a few of the many news articles regarding sexual abuse within USA Swimming. I am reaching out on behalf of the Athletes Executive Committee, to assure you that we stand behind all athletes and survivors of sexual abuse. We are committed to issuing in a dramatic and meaningful cultural shift in this organization, and are working very hard with Tim Hinchey, USA Swimming staff, and many current board members, to ensure that this change happens with urgency and purpose. I, myself, am a sexual assault survivor (although not at the hands of a USA Swimming member), and I am very comfortable discussing this issue from a variety of different angles. If you have any concerns, questions, or comments as we work towards a solution that protects all athletes, please do not hesitate to reach out. Change in this organization happens when athletes stand up, are vocal, and demand progress. We can make a difference. Never doubt that. Sincerely, Ceallach Gibbons
