Representing four different high schools, 13 Central Iowa Aquatics swimmers competed at the 2018 Iowa Boys’ High School State Swimming Meet and picked up ten Top 10 individual places.
Ankeny freshman, Trent Frandson, had two Top 5 swims in individual events including an All-American consideration time of 4:32.42 in the 500 Freestyle where he placed 2nd. He finished 5th in the 200 Freestyle. Frandson helped the Hawks to 3rd place finishes in both of the Freestyle Relays including an All-American consideration time of 1:26.13 in the 200 Free Relay.
Cameron Linder was the state runner-up in the 200 Individual Medley and also placed 4th in the 500 Freestyle. The Waukee sophomore was on the 4th place 400 Freestyle Relay and 7th place 200 Medley Relay.
Johnston senior, Scott Lair, was 3rd in the 200 Individual Medley and 6th in the 500 Freestyle. He was also on the Dragons’ 200 Medley Relay and 400 Freestyle Relay, which each placed 8th.
Evan Porter of Valley (WDM) placed 3rd in the 100 Backstroke and 8th in the 200 Freestyle. The junior was also on the state champion 400 Freestyle Relay team that recorded an All-American consideration time of 3:06.87 and the 3rd place 200 Medley Relay.
Grant Lair of Johnston was 6th in the 200 Individual Medley and 12th in the 100 Backstroke. The senior was also on the 8th place 200 Medley Relay and 400 Freestyle Relay, which also placed 8th.
Johnston’s Jaxon Kaster placed 10th in the 100 Butterfly and the sophomore was on the 8th place 200 Medley Relay.

*Jake Dieleman (Johnston) 15th in the 100 Freestyle, 200 Medley Relay 8th, 200 Freestyle Relay 12th, 400 Freestyle Relay 8th
*Kade Copple (Valley) 16th in the 500 Freestyle
*Davis Kuhlers (Waukee) 21st in the 100 Backstroke, 200 Medley Relay 7th, 200 Freestyle Relay 6th
*Nick Johnson (Valley) 22nd in the 500 Freestyle
*Ryan Warrick (Johnston) 23rd in the 200 Freestyle, 200 Freestyle Relay 12th, 400 Freestyle Relay 8th
*Max VanDerPol (Johnston) 200 Freestyle Relay 12th
Ames won the team title with 221 points and Valley was right behind with 220. Ankeny finished 3rd, Waukee 5th, and Johnston 9th.
The 2018 Iowa Boys’ High School State Meet was held on Saturday, February 10 at the University of Iowa’s Campus Recreation and Wellness Center.
