Heart of a Champion Project

Jose Cerda was a Marlins swimmer and Sycamore HS Water Polo player who suffered from sudden cardiac arrest at the age of 18 several years ago after swim practice.  Ths is known as Sudden Cardiac Death (SCD).

After hearing Jose's story at swim and water polo events and learning more about SCD, St. Xavier sophomores,  John Alvord, Keegan Graham, Kirk Karbowsky, and Kieran Mc Kenna decided to try to stop this from happening to other young athletes. The best approach to SCD is prevention by detecting kids who are at risk by cardiac screening. They have started  Heart Of a Champion Project with backing from the Jose Cerda Aquatic Foundation and Cincinnati Marlins to raise money to provide free heart screenings so that kids would may not otherwise be tested can find out if they are at risk for SCD. This year they hope to raise at least $7500 to provide free screening to 100 student athletes.  To donate or for more information, please go to their website or check out their video
