At day two of Senior Open, Rapids swimmers continued the race for top spots. In the 100 freestyle, Janine Low, Matthew Meuleman, and Ethan Chan qualified for the B final. With a new best time in the event, Low and Meuleman also came in under the Western National cut. In the 200mbutterfly, Nicolaas Dekker qualified for the A final, while Lily Ford swam herself into the B final, dropping 4 seconds from her previous best. Two Rapids swimmers qualified for finals in the 200 IM: Amanda McCallum in the A final, and Matthew Crawford in the B. The 400 freestyle event concluded with three boys making it into the B final: Samuel Pei, Ethan Chan, and Matthew Meuleman. To finish off the morning session, Matthew Crawford and Amanda McCallum both landed themselves into the 100 back final.
In Saturday’s finals, Nicolaas Dekker won the 50 butterfly with a time of 25.49. Dekker also placed fourth in the 200 butterfly. Crawford finished sixth in the 100 back, and McCallum placed seventh in the 200 IM. Samuel Pei added a CSC cut to his resume, dropping 4 seconds from his best time in the 400 freestyle and finishing 12th in 4:16.33.
On the last day of the meet, the Rapids squad finished the day with a combined total of 25 finals swims. Lily Douglas earned a B final in the 100 butterfly and confirmed one more Westerns cut. Janine Low got a new personal best and B final in the 50 backstroke and swam herself into the A final for the 50 freestyle. Morgan Mark also qualified in the 50 free, and Amanda McCallum qualified in the 200 free, finishing fifth overall.
The men’s team stepped up as well. Matthew Meuleman qualified for finals in both of his events. James Kwaksistala added another top three finish by winning the 100 breaststroke in the para-category. Nicolaas Dekker placed second in the 100 butterfly in finals, and Samuel Pei once again swam under the CSC cut, this time in the 200 freestyle.
After three days of hard racing, the senior squad looks to start their well-deserved taper as they begin to prepare for Canadian Nationals and Westerns.
