Cole Kuster and Isaac Boyd wrap up Speedo Sectionals in style!

Ithaca College was home to the Speedo Sectional Championship meet this past weekend and hosted over 600 excited athletes. Isaac Boyd and Cole Kuster competed in a combined 11 events and 2 time trial swims from Thursday, March 22nd through Sunday, March 25th. The meet is set up in a trials/finals format which means that each athlete must swim fast enough in the morning to place top 36 to make it back for the evening swim. For the evening "finals" session they swim that event again for final placing. This makes for long and very exciting days for each athlete!

Isaac Boyd competed in the 100 yard breaststroke, 200 yard breaststroke, 200 yard backstroke, 200 yard individual medley and swam time trials of the 200 yard freestyle as well as the 100 yard freestyle. Isaac had amazing drops in time in both the 200 yard free (1:49.78) for a 5.92 second time drop and the 100 yard free (50.79) for a personal best by 2.93 seconds. Isaac made it back for finals in the 100 yard breaststroke and the 200 yard backstroke where he placed in the top 31 of his event.

Cole Kuster also competed in a lengthy list of events over the long weekend which included the 1650 yard freestyle, 200 yard freestyle, 400 yard individual medley, 200 yard butterfly, 500 yard freestyle, 1000 yard freestyle, 100 yard freestyle and 200 yard individual medley. Cole boasted 3rd place in the 1650 freestyle, 6th place in the 200 yard freestyle, and 7th in the 400 yard individual medley. He also swam his way to the top of the podium several times taking 1st place in the 1000 yard freestyle (9:15.33) as well as the 500 yard freestyle (4:29.01) where there had been over 55 athletes in the prelim session of that event.

When asked how they felt about the weekend both boys commented that they were "always just one swim away from an even better mood". Maintaining a positive mental approach and keeping their eyes focused forward allowed the athletes to enjoy the moments as they experienced them. Isaac mentioned that it was pretty special to have been able to hand out the medals for the 500 yard freestyle and to have been the "coach" to hand Cole his first place medal at the podium.

We are extremely happy for both Cole and Isaac and hope they enjoy a little time off before the long course season begins!
