UPDATE ARPIL 11 TH , 2018
Some meet experiences are just that an experience, that's all. You gain strength, courage, and confidence by every experience in which you really stop to look fear in the face. To be a champion, I think you have to see the big picture. That every opportunity no matter what size of meet or caliber of meet is an opportunity to learn something and get better, not only in time off but in tactics to the race and technique.
Cherish every opportunity and always give your best.
I thought of this as I watched two of our swimmers competing at the Canadian Swimming Championships, yup the big leagues, the meet where no more then 500 swimmers in Canada make the standards to compete at. It can be scary, fun, exciting, challenging, rewarding, disappointing, all at the same time. Swimmers will have success or failure at the meet. But they will learn.
This past weekend most of our swimmers challenged themselves at Swim-a-thon, but some choose not to do it. Swim-a-thon is not just about the raising money for new blocks or whatever. It is about learning how to overcome fears and challenge yourself to new heights. Swimmers who have struggled to swim two lengths of the pool, swam 40 lengths or more in an hour. As coaches we feel that this is an amazing, rewarding opportunity for the swimmers to build confidence and learn to overcome fears.
Coach Sarah said this about her swimmers “they were all so into it, they set goals as to how many lengths they thought they could do before they started”. We all believe it is good for every swimmer mentally and physically, as we prepare for the next phase of the swimmer cycle.
As we start working towards the Aqua 7 final, Regionals and Provincials and Junior Nationals, please realize that there will be ups and downs, and each time there will be something to learn.
I always wanted to be Peter Pan, the boy who never grows up. I can't fly, but swimming is the next best thing. It's harmony and balance. The water is my sky. ~Clayton Jones
Water was something he loved, something he respected. He understood
its beauty and its dangers. He talked about swimming as if it were
a way of life.”
