Last night we had an information session for those attending or considering attending the Ken Dunn Championships in Halifax (July 5-9th) this summer.
To start, for those who are new to this level of competition, the Ken Dunn Championship in July (and the David Fry Championships in March) are essentially our East Coast Championships featuring the best competitors from clubs in Atlantic Canada. This is a great level of competition for the Legends to assess how we performing as a club versus our peers.
At last season's Legends AGM we introduced the goal of winning the Team Championship competition at this meet. An aggressive goal that has been a strong united vision for many swimmers in our club this season. In order to have a chance to achieve this goal the objective is to try and get all qualified swimmers in our club to attend, all hands on deck! Attached in this link are the qualifying standards, for help reading these standards please see your group coach with those questions.
TEAM TRAVEL will be
departing on Wednesday, July 4th in the mid-morning, likely flying
OYO TRAVEL... we ask that you do your best to try and arrive early enough in Halifax on Wednesday, July 4th so we can all be at the pool for a pre-meet training session at the Dalplex starting at 4:30PM local time.
The team travelers will be staying at the Cambridge Suites Hotel, the same hotel we were at for the David Fry Champs in March. The website for the Cambridge Suites can be found at this link.
The pool competition will run Thursday-Sunday with Heats and Finals each day.
For OYO Travellers... we ask that you please arrange your travel in order to be available for the Sunday PM session. All hands on deck, filling Finals. Finals will be over at approximately 7:45PM on Sunday night so if you have to fly back on Sunday PM we ask that you please plan accordingly.
There is an open water competition on Monday, July 9th that will run from 7:30AM to approximately 11:30AM (including awards presentations). The Team Travelers will stay to accomodate participation in the Open Water competition for all those interested in racing the 1km, 3km, or 5km competition (the 3km and 5km are only being run for 13 and over swimmers, 12 and under swimmers are welcome to race the 1km race).
The team travel will return to St. John's on an afternoon flight on Monday, July 9th.
MANAGING TEAM TRAVEL COSTS
In the interest of keeping Team Travel costs as low as possible we are going to ask all those who are currently qualified and know they are 100% attending to opt-in by Thursday, May 17th by 5PM so we can start to put together attendance numbers and travel arrangements (flights, rooms, transportation). This includes those who would like to participate in Team Travel and those who know they will travel OYO.
For those who are not yet qualified or unsure of participation we are happy to have you added to the participant roster following the Pan AM Invitational (May 25-27) or our Summer Classic meet (June 1-3). Costs will be determined at that time.
The scratch deadline for the Ken Dunn Championships and the opt-in deadline will be June 11th.
Opt-in can be sent through Jessica in the office at email@example.com please.
POST-MEET VACATION GOERS
For families that would like to springboard from Halifax to a post-meet summer vacation we welcome you to join us for Team Travel but we are going to ask you to book your own flights and arrange transportation to and from the airport to join the team by checking in with the Chaperones at the Cambridge Suites or the Dalplex. Obviously if your are able to book the same flights as the full Team Travel group we will be happy to have you join us for transportation to and from airport.
CJC QUALIFIERS POST-MEET TRAINING CAMP OPPORTUNITY
For those who are qualified (or are close and plan on qualifying) and plan on attending the Canadian Junior Championships in Winnipeg later in July we have potential camp opportunity to propose to you. We have been working with the Hafliax Trojans to put together a post-meet "training camp" for those attending the National meets in an Atlantic Canada team and community building initiative. Tentatively we have buy-in for participation from the Legends, Trojans, the club from Moncton (Codiac Vikings), the club from Fredricton (FAST), and the club from Charlottetown (Charlottetown Bluefins).
The vision we are working with is a 2-day camp in Halifax with participants flying back to St. John's on Wednesday, July 11th in the afternoon/evening.
Could those who are qualified for CJCs or close to qualifying for CJCs please message Dave and/or Tracy with questions you may have and we can start to assess potential interest in this camp. We think it's a strong idea and have been working on it with the Trojans since March and we think it can go a long way in building friendships with swimmers and clubs in our region.
