Three of GPAC’s top distance swimmers became the first team members to compete in a national open water competition as they traveled to Tempe, AZ to race in USA Swimming’s Junior National Open Water Championships May 4-6.
“Open water is a new frontier for our program and we are proud of these trailblazers,” said head coach Phil Kraus, who traveled with the team to Arizona. “We have had more swimmers selected for our LSC open water zone team over the last few years and that has led to more opportunities for these swimmers.”
Makayla Ludwick, 16, Maren Mackey, 14, and James Tracey, 16, represented GPAC at the event, with Mackey swimming the 5k race while Ludwick and Tracey tackled the 7.5k race. Maren was the highest finisher for the team, placing 28th in her swim. Makayla finished in the top-30, placing 29th and James finished 40th.
Tracey qualified for the open water event by posting qualifying times in their distance races in the pool, established by USA Swimming. Both Ludwick and Mackey qualified for the event by finishing in the top-five at the Southern Zone Open Water meet held last summer as a member of the Southeastern Swimming zone team.
GPAC is proud to have these swimmers representing the team at the national level.
