Coach Spotlight- Coach Mary
Coach Mary Hoyt is the primary coach at our Cocoa Beach training site. Coach Hoyt started swimming when she was 13. When she was 15, she qualified for the 1980 Olympic Trials. Mary developed a strong work ethic as a young athlete, often training 7-8 hours a day in hopes of getting a college scholarship. She qualified for the 1984 Olympic Swim Team for Canada in the 200 breaststroke and was 4th in the world at the time. Representing Canada at the Olympics was Mary’s proudest moment as a swimmer. Mary went on to swim for the University f Georgia making her UGA’s first female Olympian. Mary earned multiple degrees at UGA including a Master’s degree in early childhood education.
Mary & husband Rick and we have been married for 30 years this August, Rick also swam for UGA. Mary’s daughters, Shelby & Shea both competed at the Division 1 power conference level, with Shelby swimming for NC State and Shea swimming for Iowa.
Mary believes swim practice should be fun while
providing perfect technique, believing that perfect technique is
the key to producing rocket fast swims.
Coach Hoyt is inspired by the other coaches she is working with and would like to see ROCOA take over the Space Coast area as the top provider of quality competitive swim training. She is confident that this will happen soon with the great coaching staff we have assembled and the great swimmers we have representing us in the pool. Her favorite part of coaching is having the opportunity to bring out the best in her swimmers both as athletes and as young people.
Her favorite things to do outside of pool is to play tennis and just started doing yoga. She is also a bit of a runner, generally running a 5K, 10K or 1/2 marathon a couple times a month! She loves iced coffee and pump up music to get her ready for her tennis matches.!!!
ROCOA well represented at USA Swimming
Congratulations to Mikey Gipson, Katelyn Owl, Xavier Barnes and Alicia Barnes for representing ROCOA at the USAS Diversity camp which was conducted April 29th. ROCOA is proud to celebrate diversity amongst our membership and excited for the continued opportunity to provide quality coaching and leadership to swimmers of all different backgrounds. Swimming is for EVERYONE!!!
