Today is Mother's Day. Mother’s Day is a celebration honoring the mother of the family, as well as motherhood, maternal bonds, and the influence of mothers in society. It is celebrated on various days in many parts of the world, most commonly in the months of March or May.
In 1908, the US Congress rejected a proposal to make Mother's Day an official holiday, joking that they would also have to proclaim a "Mother-in-law's Day". However, by 1911 all US states observed the holiday, with some of them officially recognizing Mother's Day as a local holiday in 1910. In 1914, Woodrow Wilson signed a proclamation designating Mother's Day, held on the second Sunday in May, as a national holiday to honor mothers.
Mother's Day is celebrated in more than 46 countries throughout the world. On this day, many people pray in churches in honor of mothers, while some gift them presents on this day to express their love. Some may have dinner at home with the family. One of the most popular ways people celebrate Mother's Day is by giving their mother a card and bouquet of flowers. As it is a holiday, some people prefer to go out for a picnic to celebrate this festival. In schools, kids dedicate poems to their mothers and also perform various roles on this day. In many cases, children and fathers take on the "mom" role on this day as an expression of their appreciation, leaving the mother in the family to focus on rest and relaxation for the day.
For all the ones that brought us unto this world, who said we could when we thought we couldn’t, who said we shouldn’t when we thought we should, who said we can when we thought we can’t, we say thanks. For the one that stood in front of us when we were threatened, beside us when we were afraid, and behind us when were awesome, we say thanks.
To the one who was there when we knew we needed her and even when we didn’t think we did, we say thanks. To the one who cleaned us up, healed our wounds, let us fall then picked us up, trusted us to go out in the world, and always made home feel like home, we say thanks.
So, however you choose to honor Mom, make sure it is a special day. Whether she needs family time or alone time, lots of conversation or peace and quiet, a huge party or a meaningful hug, do whatever she wants.
From all of us kids to all of you moms, happy Mother’s Day!
