Wildkats Survive Heat, Marlins to Remain Undefeated

It was the first meet of the season in which the Willowick Wildkats didn't have to fight through rain drops to finish their races. Mother Nature was still an active opponent of both teams as the temperatures pushed their way toward 90-degrees all morning.

Willowick though pushed through the rising temperatures to remain undefeated, beating visiting Mentor, 310-161. It was it's first win against a Division I team this summer. It's also the third consecutive week the Wildkats have gone higher than the 300-point mark. Only one other team (Chardon) has done it once.

Willowick will travel to Chardon next week for a battle of the last two undefeated teams.

The Wildkats started fast against Mentor and just never looked back - winning six of the eight medley relays and 14 of the first 18 races. They continued to cruise, winning at least five of each of the eight individual stroke races the rest of the meet.

Willowick was led by 11 swimmers who won both of their individual races:

  • Colton Cutwright - 8&U 25 butterfly, 50 freestyle
  • Nathaniel Peters - 8&U 25 freestyle, 25 backstroke
  • Sophia DeRenzo - 9-10 100 IM, 50 breaststroke
  • Carmella Taraska - 9-10 50 freestyle, 50 butterfly
  • Pete DiCello - 9-10 50 butterfly, 100 freestyle
