We are sad to announce the passing of Official Richard "Bear" Herman

 It is with much sadness that the Indiana Swimming Community has lost a fine Official as well as a very fine man.

Richard L. “Bear” Herman, 61 of Hobart, passed away suddenly and unexpectedly on Saturday, July 7, 2018.  He was born July 20, 1956 in La Grange, IL to Richard J. and Coralie (Klemp) Herman.  Bear served proudly with the U.S. Army’s 82nd Airborne Division. He made his career as a master diesel mechanic, currently with UPS. Bear’s talents and interests covered a diverse spectrum from his backyard chicken coop and hog roasts to roller skating, swimming and riding his Harley-Davidson. He was an avid reader, particularly Stephen King novels and got his children started early on suspense thrillers.  Survivors include his children: Heather Herman of LaGrange, IL, Harley Herman of Valparaiso, Heidi (Ceasar) Solis of Loveland, CO, Carol (Justin) Nelson of Longmont, CO, Thelma “Teejay” (Jon) Ramsey of Manilla, IN, 8 grandchildren, sister, Carol (Noel) Gomez of Nokomis, IL and his girlfriend, Michele Picka of Hobart. His children always held the foremost place in his heart and mind.

A visitation will be held Friday from 3 – 7 pm at Moeller Funeral Home, Valparaiso. The funeral service will begin at 10:30 am Saturday with cremation to follow.  In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to Indiana Swimming, Counsilman Grant Fund, 201 S. Capitol Ave., Suite 410, Indianapolis, IN 46225.
