ROCS Jets to Winnipeg for Canadian Junior Championships
Today ROCS sent its largest group of qualifiers to Winnipeg to compete in the Canadian Junior Championships. This 6-day meet is the highest national-level competition for swimmers aged 18 & under. Over 700 swimmers will be in attendance from 147 clubs, representing 10 provinces and 5 countries.
Our swimmers will be competing in the Winnipeg Pan Am Pool built in 1967 for the Pan American Games. This facility has two 8-lane 50m pools and is the home of the Manta Swim Club where Olympic Bronze Medallist (4 x 100 FR), Chantal van Landeghem trained as an age-group swimmer.
This year ROCS was very proud to qualify seven swimmers for this event. We have a young team attending Winnipeg with the ages in our group ranging from 13 to 15 years old. Sawyer Bosley and William Risk are returning to this meet for the second time after their first qualification during the 2016-2017 season, while first time qualifiers, Merin Boyd, Katie Ford, and Jackson Waddell will be making their debut on the national stage.
We must also mention our qualifiers in the 200m breaststroke Sara Andersen and Luca Haines. Unfortunately, Sara had to decline the invitation due to injury and Luca was ineligible to attend because he has not yet aged up into the 14-15 age category. The coaches are still very, very proud of their efforts this season!
Coach Nico who arrived in Winnipeg on Monday is anxious to see all of the hard work the swimmers put in over the course of the year put into action. The psych sheets indicate it is going to be a busy weekend with lots of fantastic swimming from our group! We need to make sure our swimmers can hear our cheers from Ottawa so please keep a lookout for results from the following swimmers Wednesday through Monday:
