July Swimmers of the Month
To celebrate the last month and the end of an amazing season, our coaches would like to recognize some athletes who really showed off some incredible work ethic and results! We had many exciting events happen including Tier II Championships, Canadian Junior Championships (Nationals), and SKSC Invitational. Despite the heat, our swimmers continued to work hard, not just on their tan, but on their swimming as well. On behalf of the coaches, Congratulations to the following swimmers on an outstanding finish to the year:
Age Group Blue - Jacob Zabudsky
This past July Jacob has been an absolute super star! Jacob came to nearly every practice and worked his butt off in every one as well! His dedication and love of swimming and to the Winskill Dolphins was clearly showcased through out this season and especially this past month. Congratulations Jacob and WDSC looks forward to seeing you next year! :)
Age Group Gold - Yinan Zhu
If there’s anyone that the whole club should look up to, it’s Yinan Zhu. This girl is one of the strongest and most hard working athletes in the club both in and out of the pool. No matter what the circumstance, she’s always willing and open to improving herself. She’s always working to make her technique as accurate as possible in both swimming and dryland. Mix this with the amazing strength and power she has and she can show some incredible results. This was most exemplified at our last meet of the year where she achieved 100% best times including a 5” drop in the 200 IM !! Yinan, you set a great example of what a Winskill Dolphin swimmer is and I hope you continue you amazing work ethic! Congratulations!
Provincial - Sassy Busby
The Swimmer of the Month for Provincial once again goes to Sassy Busby! This girl has continued her hard work in and out of the pool. In the pool, she continues to focus on correcting her technique and improving her strokes. Out of the pool, she’s always cheering on her teammates and improving her dryland exercises. Even while she was away for a lifeguarding courses, she asked for practices to do after her course was done for the day. By the end of the month, she reached her goal of breaking 3 minutes in the 200 IM as well as dropping 12” in the 400 free while racing her teammate Isabel. Congratulations Sassy!
National - Calvin Slinn
The final and last swimmer of the month for the month of July goes to Calvin Slinn.
Calvin Slinn most recently attended the Canadian Junior Championships in Winnipeg, Manitoba with his team mates Naomi, Thomas and Devon, where he swam to great success. I was very proud of all the swimmers performances, especially the bonus swims at the time trials.
Calvin Slinn did an outstanding job in the 400 free placing 4th with an 8 second improvement to swim a 4:08, narrowly missing a bronze medal, but what a spectacular finish by Calvin, racing and battling all the way to the wall! In the 800 free he also placed 4th with a 9 second improvement and in the 1500 free he placed 5th with a 16 second improvement to swim it in 16:30.
The sixth day of competition saw us load up the rented van and drive an hour out of the city limits to St Malo where Naomi and Calvin competed in an open water lake swim. Naomi placed 30th out of 6o swimmers in her age group while Calvin placed an impressive 2nd place, Winning a silver medal and very sought after stuffed animal!!
The course was set at 1490 meters of lake swimming, but Calvin lead most of the way being cheered on by Naomi, Devon, Thomas and Jenny. He swam a little off course and was overtaken in the last 400 meters by the national open water champion. But another great race for Calvin and team mate Naomi!!
Congratulations for your outstanding achievements this year Calvin!!
