Sad news from Alice Godfred, Olympic Cascade Aquatics
His journey was long, His journey was hard, and now his journey has come to an end. Cancer overtook John at 4:00am August 18, 2018. The last few weeks since he posted to his caring bridge were very difficult but hard fought. He was in and out of the hospital and they tried every option they could to beat the cancer down. It finally got to the point that there were no other options. On August 14 Ellen, his Brother Zach, and Mom packed up the car and headed to Montana for his final wish of being at their family cabin to live out his last few days. The goal was to make it for his 50th birthday on August 15th, and he did. He was able to be with his immediate family and say his goodbyes.
Life is really not fair; today we lost a great Friend, Coach, and overall Great Person. For those lucky enough to have known John there was no other person who held such a high bar for himself and those around him. His final words to me were….”Being right is not as important as doing the right thing, be true to yourself and always try to be better every day”. He wanted everyone to be happy and keep smiling! I share those words to everyone who knew him. We were all blessed to have had “Coach John” in our lives.
May peace be with Ellen, his Mom, Zach, Jessica, and Mandy and all the swimmers, coaches and friends that he touched so deeply.
We will be having a celebration of life for Coach John at a future date to be determined.
Until we meet again…..Alice
