PENTATHLON NOTES

We have not received the results from the PAAC Pentathlon on Sunday.  When we do, we will send out a Pentathlon recap showing EMAC and PAAC Pentathlon results.

The pentathlon was the first meet where we could assess progress that we’ve made to this point.

As we noted in the Bleacher Talk sessions last week, we’ve pinpointed pushing off of the wall as the most propulsive skill in the sport.   Through the first month of the season, we’ve prioritized this skill.  At the meet, EMAC swimmers excelled in our push-offs and underwater butterfly kicks.  We even had two coaches from other teams go out of their way to compliment us on how well we looked underwater.

Remember, it takes time for swimmers to learn and implement skills.  Because of the time necessary to automate skills, it is impossible to master a large number of skills in a short period of time.  What we saw at the Pentathlon follows suit.  Our swimmers excelled in the areas in which we’ve focused.  They did not excel in areas in which we have not focused.

After debriefing the coaching staff, we’ve identified the following prioritizes for the remainder of the month of October:

Bees:

  • Continued focus on pushing off of the wall correctly, with power and propulsion
  • Improve/learn skills while approaching the wall
  • Improve/learn turns (backstroke turns are a priority)
  • Continued growth on stroke technique including more detailed Breaststroke and Butterfly development

Wasps:

  • Continued focus on pushing off of the wall correctly, with power and propulsion
  • Build conditioning around the ability to properly execute push-offs
  • Improve/learn turns (backstroke turns are a priority)
  • Continued growth on stroke technique including more detailed Breaststroke and Butterfly development

Killer Bees:

  • Continued focus on great habits in and around walls
  • Continued focus on being kick driven and finishing freestyle
  • Begin working on non-FR and conditioning

We will be evaluating our progress in these highlighted areas through our performance at our upcoming meets.
