On the weekend of October 13th and 14th, VPSC saw some great early season swimming from the Youth Regional and Senior Regional swimmers who raced at the SFU/SFA LMR. This was a great chance for our swimmers to get off the blocks and gain some race experience at the beginning of the season, and it was fantastic to see all swimmers so excited to race.
The Youth Regional group had nine swimmers in attendance, many of whom were swimming at their first LMR and non-marshalled meet. The weekend’s racing provided an important learning opportunity for these swimmers racing under a different format, in a new environment, and doing some new events for the first time. Charlotte MacGowan, Amy Shumka, and Julian E all showed grit and focus with excellent 200 IM races, while Aryo Behzadi spread his wings and got after his 50 Butterfly race with a best time by 6 seconds. Allan Crawford, Emi Garlappi, and Abu Liu also put together great swims in the 100 Backstroke, while Miles Lee posted best times in both the 200 IM and 50 Breaststroke.
The Senior Regional swimmers took advantage of the first chance to race this season as well! Mark Zhitnitsky swam to best times in the 50 Breaststroke and the 100 Backstroke. Lucia Pochnyok also had 2 best times including a 2 second improvement in the 50 Breaststroke, which saw her break the 50 second barrier for the first time in her career. Ramon Siytangco swam to a best time in the 100 Backstroke, while Jack He competed in the 200 Breaststroke for the first time. The meet acted as a really good marker to see where the swimmers are at during the beginning part of the season, and what changes and skills they can work on going forward!
Next up for our VPSC swimmers is the VPSC Fall Invitational on October 27th and 28th at our home pool, the UBC Aquatic Centre!
