'Cudas Go for Gold in First Outing of the Season

The Barracudas kicked off their competition season at Go for the Gold, joining a couple of hundred swimmers from 10 different teams at Raritan Valley Community College over the weekend. Our 28 attending swimmers validated their early-season training earning Top Places, Gold Times, New Team Records, and some Personal Best Times.

While typically these achievements are earned at the end of the season, 19 of our swimmers decided not to wait: Top 3 Places were swum by Jillian Berg (2nd in 400 IM, 3rd in 500 Free); Zach Bezold (3rd in 200 Breast); Jordan Maruska (2nd in 200 Free); Jake Riva (2nd in 500 Free); Billy Ruddy (2nd in 200 Free); Sam Russell (2nds in 100 Breast, 100 Free, 200 IM, and 3rd in the 50 Free); including First Places by Jordan Maruska (400 IM), Jake Riva (100 Back, 100 Fly, 100 Free, 200 Back, 400 IM, 50 Free), and Sam Russell (200 Breast, 500 Free).

Places weren’t the only story; there were some great swims throughout the meet. About a third of our swims were Career Best Times (48 of our 136 splashes to be exact), and another 14 were first time swims. Some of these were significant drops, including Salome Calderon’s 100 Breast (-7.66); Addie Lillo’s 50 Fly (-7.92); Marco Innamorato’s 100 Free (-7.95); and Will Vetter’s 200 IM (-13.27). Ty Hollar brought the magic, dropping a cumulative 66.6 seconds with big swims in his 100 Free (-10.73), 100 IM (-13.58); 100 Breast (-12.31); 50 Fly (-17.89); 50 Free (-9.65), and more. There were also 15 NJ Swimming Gold Times swum.

New NJB Team Records were set by Nathaniel Kern (50 Back, 100 Back); Andrew Carlson (200 Back); Jordan Maruska (400 IM); and Jake Riva (400 IM).
