2018 USA Swimming Juniors Championships West
December 12, 2018
This December 5-8, Tualatin Hills Swimmers once again participated in the Winter Juniors meet. This is a relatively new meet on our calendar and we’ve only participated the past 4 years as we used to focus on SCM racing through December in the past. Nevertheless, this meet (and it’s counterpart in the east) provides our swimmers a chance to swim against the best in the nation at this time of the year.
This year’s THSC Squad consisted of:
Fay Marie Lustria
Every swimmer did a FANTASTIC job this year. THSC finished up the meet with a combined team score of 55 points in a tie for 51st place!
The meet started out on Wednesday evening with several VERY strong swims from our 200 Medley Relays and our 800 Freestyle relays. The girl's relay of Tia, Jessica, Elizabeth, and Lily placed 11th scoring 12 points! The boy's relay of Trent, Angus, Nalex, and Marco faced some STRONG competition as they were seeded in the top 1 or 2 heats every relay. That being said, everyone swam EXTREMELY STRONG placing 46th overall.
The girls 800 freestyle relay WON THEIR heat in dramatic fashion with Tia swimming a best time to lead off (made all the more impressive by the fact that she was fighting a strong case of food poisioning!), with Lily Gardner just missing the 1:50 barrier followed by Elizabeth in a best every split giving the exchange to Sofia who also just missed the 1:50 barrier but ran down the very strong Crow Canyon team in the process. They placed 5th overall! The boy's relay all swam best times or very close to them as well to close out the night! THSC was off to a GREAT start!
On Thursday, Trent went his second fastest time ever of 4:27 which earned him a B final swim. He would end up placing 20th overall and bring home some very valuable team points!
In the girls 200 IM both Jessica Maeda and Fay Lustria swam just off their best times but more importantly had two of their best prelims swims. At meets of this level learning how to swim fast in the morning is extremely important and all of the THSC swimmers showed that they are quickly learning this skill.
On the men’s side of things Marco Nosack swam a best time of 1:53.09 and both Angus Corbeau and Katherine Adams time trialed to best times as well! (Katherine actually recorded 100% best times at the meet! Way to go Katherine!)
That night the women’s 400 Medley Relay took home 15th place whith Sofia Nosack leading off in close to a best time of 56.34, followed by Jessica (1:03.69), Elizabeth (54.96), and Lily Gardner (who much like Katherine was on her way to recording all best times at the meet!).
That brought us to Friday. The 400 IM was the first event and the lone THSC swimmer was Marco. He swam a best time of 4:02.74 and THSC was off and rolling! Next up was the 100 butterfly. Always a strong event for us, this year was no different. Elizabeth Cook, Lily Gardner, and Fay Lustria all swam strong races to place 38, 61, and 107th respectively. Nalex young went a best time in time trials of 52.24.
In the 200 freestyle, Trent Martinez again managed to make it back to swim in the finals session showing that he’s set up very well to perform the remainder of the year for high school swimming and at senior sectionals.
The 100 yard breaststroke was a chance for Marco to continue his strong meet with a best time 56.98.
Tia Lindsay was back to competing but still recovering a bit and swam extremely strong given the circumstances leading the way for the THSC backstrokers just off her best time in 56.83 showing that she was improving daily.
That brings us to Saturday, the final day of the meet. As always, these meets feel like they last forever until the last day then, poof!, they’re done. But the THSC swimmers were determined to swim strong and fast all the way to the end!
In the women’s 200 yard backstroke Sofia Nosack swam an extremely strong swim breaking 2:00 for only the second time ever with a 1:59.48. She’ll definitely be looking for big drops by March and this swim should be a HUGE confidence builder.
Definitely the highlight of the final day were the 400 freestyle relays. It was fun watching both the girls team (Elizabeth, Lily, Tia and Sofia; 12th place) and the mens (Trent, Marco, Angus, and Nalex) give it there all for one last swim at the University of Texas - Austin natatorium.
By all accounts, this meet was one of the strongest THSC has had in the past few years and each swimmer should be extremely proud of their contribution to that performance! Way to go! Bigger and better things lie ahead and you’re all running to them at top speed with enthusiasm and commitment! Let’s keep that going!
