The Phoenix Swims to Fourth Place Finish at State Meet!
The Phoenix were on fire at the 11 and under State Meet held at St. Augustine Prep over the past weekend. This meet allows 11 and under swimmers (including 8-unders) to compete in a single-age format against the fastest swimmers in the state. It is a qualifying meet and all who swam had to meet tough time standards to participate.
The team was enthusiastic and showed a lot of grit as they swam to many personal bests. They swam to a fourth-place finish behind BAC, MAC and Schroeder. There were many top 10 podium finishes and top 20 point-scorers. Here is a recap of the meet.
8 and Under:
Girls: The 8 and Unders were led by Tessa Hansen who placed 2nd in the 25 breaststroke, 9th in the 25 free, tied for 6th in the 50 free, 7th in the 100 IM and 17th in the 25 fly. Tessa also became one of the few 8-under swimmers to join the 20 below club in the 25 breast! Tessa scored 21 points for the team and went 4/5 for lifetime bests. Leah Chung tied with Tessa for 6th in the 50 free, placed 20th in the 25 back, 9th in the 25 breaststroke and 13th in the 100 IM. She scored 16 points for the team and had 4/6 lifetime bests. Emilee Smerecki was the highest placing swimmer for LAKE in the 25 fly with a 14th; she also contributed points with a 19th in the 25 back. Emilee went 3/3 in lifetime bests! Our final 8 and under, Sophie Schneider placed 19th in the 25 fly, and made the 20 below club with a new best time in the 25 back while leading off the relay. Tessa, Sophie, Leah and Charlie Bishop (9) teamed together for the 9 and under medley relay and made the podium with a 3rd place finish! The same 4 girls teamed together to place 8th in the 100 free relay.
Boys: Andrei Buznea was our lone 8 and under boy individual qualifier. He made the top 13 in every one of his events! He tied for STATE CHAMPION in an exciting 25 breaststroke! He also placed 13th in the 25 free, 10th in the 25 backstroke and 8th in the 25 fly. He went lifetime bests in all 4 of his events! He teamed up with David Wessel, Rohan Rajesh, and Mac Wessel to place 3rd in the 100-medley relay and placed 5th in the 100 free relay. Congratulations boys!
9 Year Olds
Girls: Charlie Bishop had an amazing meet as she swam huge lifetime bests in all 3 of her events. The highlight was a 2.48 second drop in the 50 fly where she came in 2nd! She also placed 4th in the 50 free and 13th in the 50 back. Charlie scored 47.5 points for the team!
Boys: David Wessel scored 35 points for Team Phoenix with huge time drops in all 3 of his events. He placed 10th in the 100 free, 10th in the 50 back and 12th in the 50 fly.
10 Year Olds
Girls: Sara Wiedoff had an outstanding meet and was the team’s top 10-year-old girl. She won second place in the overall high-point competition scoring 129 points! She was the STATE CHAMPION in the 50 and 100 fly in very close and exciting races. She placed in the top 3 in all of her individual events including a 2nd in the 100 breast and thirds in the 50 breast, 100 IM and 200 IM. Congratulations Sara! Julianna Drake was not far behind Sara for high-point scoring 115 points and placing 5th. She was the STATE CHAMPION in the 50 free! She had 5/6 lifetime bests and placed 3rd in the 100 free, 5th in the 50 back, 100 IM, 4th in the 100 back and 7th in the 50 fly. Kate Lucyshyn scored 24 points for the team placing 10th in the 100 free, 12th in the 50 free and 19th 50 breaststroke. She had 4/6 lifetime bests. Allison Gordon placed 19th in the 50 free and 12th in the 50 back. She scored 11 points for the team. Lara Manter had 4/5 lifetime bests and scored 14 points for the LAKE. She placed 13th in the 100 back and 15th in the 200 IM. Sofia Schouton also participated and had 2/3 lifetime bests and was a part of 2 relays for LAKE.
Boys: Braeden Hansen was our top 10-year-old boy. He scored 95 points for the team. His top finishes were 2nd in both the 50 and 100 breaststroke. He also finished 5th in the 100 and 200 IM and was 8th in the 50 fly and 20th in the 50 free. He was on both the 200 free and medley relays that both placed 10th. Niall Parkins scored 18 points for the team with a 12th place finish in the 50 back, 15th in the 50 breast and 18th in the 100 back. He went 3/3 in personal best times! He swam backstroke on the 10-11-year-old 200 medley that placed 10th. Charlie Williams scored 10 points for the team. He placed 16th in both the 50 and 100 back. Dean Amble scored 2 points for the team with a 19th in the 100 back and had 2/3 lifetime bests. He was also on the 10-11 boys 200 free relay that placed 10th.
11 Year Olds
Girls: Audrey Worgull was the top scorer for the 11-year-old group scoring 99 points for the team. She made the podium in all 6 of her events. She placed 5th in the 100 breast and 200 IM, 6th in the 50 back and 100 back, 7th in the 100 IM and 10th in the 50 breaststroke. Cate Wisener scored 34 points for the team placing 11th in the 100 breast, 17th in the 100 IM, 18th in the 100 free and 7th in the 50 breast. Piper Moede scored 17 points for LAKE with best times in all 6 of her events. She placed 13th in the 100 free, 15th in the 50 breaststroke and 18th in the 100 breast. Adrienne Prymas scored 14 points for the team with a 14th in both the 50 and 100 fly. Raylea Richmond went lifetime bests in 3 events. Ella Walters went best times in all three of her events. Ava Hansen also contributed with 3 lifetime bests! Sara Wiedoff, Julianna Drake, Cate Wisener and Audrey Worgull placed 4th in the 10-11 year old 200 free relay. Audrey Worgull, Sara Wiedoff, Adrienne Prymas and Julianna Drake placed 4th in the 10-11 year old 200 free relay.
Boys: Caleb Alsum scored 60 points for the team placing 8th in the 100 fly, 10th in both the 100 free and 50 free and 9th in the 50 fly. Finn Nelson added 44 points placing 18th in the 50 free, 11th in the 100 fly, 15th in the 100 IM, 13th in the 100 free, 11th in the 50 breast and 16th in the 50 fly. Both Finn and Caleb were on the 200 free and medley relays that placed 10th. Max Klockow scored 5 points with a 17th place in the 50 back and 20th in the 100 IM.
