2018 Winter Junior Championships
We knew going into Junior Nationals we were going to be good, but from the very first day of competition it was clear we were on track to swim better than expected. After four days of intense competition Bellevue Club left the meet with a combined second place award and a women’s second place award, better than any year in BCST history. GO BCST!
The first night saw our women’s relays come out swinging: Our 200 Medley Relays finished 5th and 7th and the A 800 Free Relay finished on the podium in 3rd with our B in 17th place, just outside the points. Our men’s relays saw some impressive splits from both young members of the squad - Charlie Arnold’s 26.45 breaststroke and Nathan Lee’s 22.91 butterfly. Nathan also anchored our 800 Free Relay that night in a 1:43.77.
The first full day of competition started with some great 500s by Sarah DiMeco, Cayla Prophater, Christina Bradley, Aneta Wyzga, and Jake Headrick. That night Gabby Dang scored points in her 50 free with a 13th place finish. Matt King had a great swim in his 50 to finish 3rd in finals with a 19.95. Our men’s and both of our women’s relays scored in the 400 medley relay to round out the day.
The next day Sarah DiMeco went two best times in her 400 IM and finished 5th overall. Sam Baron made it back in finals as well and finished with a 4:21.63. Nathan Lee had an amazing race on the men’s side, dropping 3 and a half seconds to finish with a 4:01.75. Gabby Dang placed 4th in her 100 Fly, and Gracie Felner went a best time in prelims in the same event. James Richardson shaved some time off and finished with a best time of 49.36. Charlie Arnold showed his talent with a blistering 100 Breast time of 57.39. James Richardson took some time off again in the 100 backstroke, finishing in a scoring heat with a 49.02. That night our women’s A 200 Free Relay of Gabby Dang, Christina Bradley, Jazlynn Pak, and Gracie Felner won the event in a total time of 1:31.16. Our men’s relay of Matt King, James Richardson, Jake Headrick, and Nathan Lee came on strong finishing in the points again for 11th.
On the last day Sarah DiMeco dropped TEN seconds to finish third in the mile with a 16:09.74. Jake Headrick also made a huge drop in his mile to finish with a 15:44.48. Gracie Felner dropped a huge 100 Free at night, dropping almost a full second over the course of the day to take second place with a time of 49.35. Matt King dropped three quarters of a second for his 3rd place finishing time of 43.62. Danika Himes led our women’s breaststroke squad of herself, Kira Grebinsky, Mia Chang, and Allison Su through the 200s with her 2:19.38 finish. Charlie Arnold dropped another great race from an outside lane in his 200 Breast to finish with a 2:04.84 and end his meet on a high note. At night our women’s A relay won again, taking home the gold in the 400 Free Relay. Our women’s B team of Sam Baron, Aneta Wyzga, Nathalie Valdman, and Sarah DiMeco dropped three and a half seconds to end their meets strong. Our men’s team of Matt King, Nathan Lee, James Richardson, and Jake Headrick snagged us some much needed points to end our weekend in Texas with the silver.
Congratulations to our 2018 Winter Junior National Team!
