2018 WA State Senior Championships

2018 Washington State Senior Championships

WA State Senior Champs was the latest in a string of fantastic performances for our team. We started the four day weekend with some dominant performances by five National Group women: Amelia Girotto, Aneta Wyzga, Cayla Prophater, Nathalie Valdman, who secured third place overall, and Sarah DiMeco taking the win that first night. Rounding off the women was 13 year-old Kaitlyn Girotto who dropped almost 40 seconds. Jimmy Butler started his weekend right with a ten second drop and Jake Headrick swam a nice race to finish fourth overall. It was a nice to see us come out swinging the first night and surely a sign of things to come.

Friday opened with the women’s 200 Free Relays and our ladies took home both the gold and bronze medals. All four men’s relays swam great as well and the A and B ended up second and fifth respectively. Next up was the women’s 200 Freestyle and Jazlynn Pak raced hard for second place and two huge time drops on the day. Amelia Girotto swam in the A final as well snagging sixth place, another best time, and some more points for the team. Rachel Jin made it back to drop time as well, ending up with a 1:55.99. In the men’s A final Matt King took second place with an impressive 1:38.03 and James Richardson locked down sixth with a best time of 1:41.97. In the B final Killian Riley and Gordon Kenny dropped some time and Jake Headrick held steady to take 11th, 18th, and 16th respectively. The event was rounded out by Jimmy Butler and Finn Heneghan who, after two fantastic morning swims, made it back to race again. Our women showed up big time in the 100 Breaststroke: Mia Chang, Danika Himes, Gracie Felner, and Kira Grebinsky took 3rd, 4th, 5th, and 6th place and a ton of points. Our two young men in the event, Charlie Arnold and Philip Howard, dropped time again in finals with two great swims. The women’s 200 Backstroke was next and Mia Chang, Sarah DiMeco, and Isabel Chien stormed through the A final with big time drops from their morning swims. Cayla Prophater and Amelia Girotto posted two amazing time drops in their heats to secure more best times earlier in the event. Nathan Lee topped our men’s performances with a nice drop and a 4th place finish with a 1:51.16, followed by Tristan Haeger and Finn Heneghan who both crushed their morning swims to make it back at night. At the end of the evening it was time for the 400 IM, and Sam Baron brought home the gold after two incredible races and massive time drops on the day. Christina Bradley finished 4th and Danika Himes finished 6th in the same heat as well. Keren Makhervaks dropped over ten seconds over the course of both her swims to secure 9th place, followed by great swims from Rachel Jin, Aneta Wyzga, and Allyson Yao. For the men, Dan Gao represented BCST well with his best time worth 10th place, and Alex Klinck and Jimmy Butler both smashed their best times in four total fantastic races. Our women’s 400 medley relays finished first and second for massive points and our men’s A relay fought hard and raced well to end up with a silver medal to end the day.

Saturday started identically to Friday with our women’s 200 Medley Relays taking home 1st and 3rd, and it is worth mentioning our D relay swimming with heart and surging up the rankings to finish 5th. Great job ladies! Our men started the night off strong again and netted second and sixth to keep the relay points rolling in. Sarah DiMeco took another win in the 200 fly with an impressive 1:57.22 and Sam Baron, Jazlynn Pak, and Keren Makhervaks followed suit with big drops as well. The men came next and Dan Gao and Jackson Dudley put on a show with their 4th & 5th place finishes in a close race between them. BCST alum Martin Wu made an appearance and did his part to secure some points with 13th place. The sprinters came out to play next, and Gabby Dang, Gracie Felner, Christina Bradley, and Jazlyn Pak owned half the A final heat with four solid drops from prelims and 2nd, 4th, 5th, & 7th place. Nathalie Valdman , Delora Li, Gracie Wang, and Allison Su did some damage in the B final as well with four more great swims. Matt King stormed his way to win in style, breaking 20 seconds in the process. Jeremy Kim grabbed two best times on his way to his 17th place finish the night as well. The 500 Free saw more A final domination by Sarah DiMeco, Nathalie Valdman, Cayla Prophater, and Aneta Wyzga. Amelia Girotto continued her amazing weekend dropping ten seconds from her prelims swim and ended up shaving some time off with a 5:02.49 at night. Katie Ueda dropped over seven seconds over the course of the day to finish 18th. Jake Headrick took home some points in 9th, followed by two more great races and time drops by Alex Klinck in 15th and Jimmy Butler in 16th. It was déjà vu in the women’s 200 Breaststroke with four A final spots taken by BCST ladies: Grebinsky took 2nd, Chang 3rd, Himes 5th, and Su 7th. Sam Baron, Allyson Yao, Delora Li, and Kynseth Mann fought their way to get second swims that night as well. Our young men took charge in the men’s event: Charlie Arnold, Philip Howard, and Nathan Lee finished 10th, 11th, and 12th in the B final as our top scorers. We finished the individual events with the 50 Backstroke and a Gabby Dang win. Katie Cross, Gracie Wang, and Mia Chang all dropped time in the A final as well. James Richardson topped the men’s results for us with his 4th place finish followed by Jeremy Kim, Sam Shauf, Weston Crewe, and Andres Gonzalez. The night ended with a grinder - the 800 free relay, where our ladies showed the field how it’s done and went one-two. Our men’s relays raced hard to their 3rd and 7th place finishes to wrap up the day.

Two young ladies crushed their miles on Sunday: Kaitlyn Girotto dropped over a minute to take 8th and Courtney Cross dropped more than 50 seconds to net a best time of 18:13.65 and ninth place overall. The men’s race saw the dynamic duo of Jimmy Butler and Finn Heneghan race each other yet again to finish 12th and 18th. Jimmy butler dropped more than 12 seconds in that race to end with a 16:40.64. Sunday finals started off with two short fast races, the 50 fly and 100 free. Gabby Dang, Jazlynn Pak, and Delora Li crushed the 50 fly A final with 1st, 3rd, and 4th place finishes. The men’s A final saw Jackson Dudley and Zach Cermak take home 2nd and 6th as well. Gracie Felner, Christina Bradley, and Gabby Dang took 2nd, 3rd, and 4th in the 100 free with nice drops from their morning races, and Matt King and James Richardson did the same in the men’s event to finish first and fourth. Next up was the 200 IM and Sarah DiMeco took the win again to finish with a best time of 2:01.49. Mia Chang, Sam Baron, Gracie Felner, and Christina Bradley took four more spots in the A final and finished 3rd, 4th, 6th, and 8th. Nathan Lee and Charlie Arnold swam in the B final of the men’s race, both dropping big chunks of time in their second IM of the day. Isabel Chien took home the gold in the 100 backstroke followed by Mia Chang in 3rd, and James Richardson dropped time from his morning swim to finish 3rd in the men’s race just after. Danika Himes snagged 5th place in the women’s 50 breast, breaking 30 with a 29.89. Philip Howard out-touched Jake Headrick in the men’s 50 breast and the duo finished 10th and 11th with a pair of :27s. The meet ended with another one-two combo from our incredible women’s 400 free relays and our men finished with a silver medal and ninth place to end the meet with BCST on top with the overall team victory.

It was a fun, fast, successful weekend for the swimmers and staff of BCST and another great stop on our team’s path. Thank you to all who helped make the weekend so amazing and as always…
