LHS Swim & Dive Meets with DCSD Leaders

LHS Swim & Dive Meets with DCSD Leaders

Yesterday Coach Newmyer and Helen Shuford, LHS Fin Club President, met with several members of Dekalb County School District administration to request full pool renovations to begin as soon as this summer. Also in attendance was Coach Carlyle from Tucker.

The assembled group watched the video produced by Lakeside’s own AV student-led team, including swimmer Nicholas Smart, which effectively shows the dilapidated condition of the LHS pool, comparing it to Chamblee’s fully renovated facilities. Link to video:

Dan Drake (DCSD Facilities & Operation), Trenton Arnold (Regional Superintendent) and James Jackson (Athletics) agreed to address several issues that require immediate attention, including rust, pool pump/mechanics, diving board safety, pool deck problems, storage of chemicals, pool leaks, and custodial needs. We have also asked for non-facilities assistance in scheduling the many schools who use the pool, improving our timing system, and solving the issues with officials not being at meets.

Additionally, there will be a follow up meeting on March 1 at the LHS pool to continue discussions about the long-term plan for pool renovations.

Thanks to all the engaged students and parents who have contributed to these exciting developments. Members of the PTSA, School Council/PAC, Fin Club, and, of course, Coach Newmyer care deeply about our students and community. Your service benefits us all.
