HTAC Update - February 14, 2019

 Happy Valentine's Day!

Novatech News

The HTAC Grassroots program has had a fantastic start to the 2018/19 swim season.  Just half way into the season, the swimmers of Grassroots have enhanced their technical skills to achieve 39 medals so far! We are super excited to see eight Alpha swimmers achieve their AA time standards, six of whom will compete the AA Winter Champs this weekend in Wolfville.

NovaTech #4 is just around the corner (February 23) and the coaches are excited to see these skills continue to grow.

Looking for an easy way to earn volunteer points and make some money towards your account?  The following Scotiabank Centre event dates are available for parking shifts at Centennial Pool parking lot.  Each event requires two adults (aged 18+) to serve as parking lot attendants for about two hours each event.  HTAC volunteers earn 1 volunteer point per shift and $35 per shift towards their swimmer’s account.

Volunteers should arrive 15 minutes prior to the start of the shift to set up and allow for another 15 minutes at the end of the shift to tear down and complete the required paperwork.  Please contact Kelly MacLennan kmacl99@icloud.com with your preferred dates.

We have seven stopwatches that are not working and think the batteries need replacing.  Can you bring them back to life?   You’ll be responsible for determining the type of battery each stopwatch needs, purchasing, and replacing the old with the new.  You will be reimbursed for the cost of the batteries and earn one volunteer point.  If you’d like to take on this challenge, contact Mhiran at officials@htac.ca

Upcoming Swim Meets

Congratulations to Gia Mensah and Sophie Rooney who join other HTAC Eastern Championship-qualified swimmers Ethan Boyle, Grace Earle, Isabelle Dearnaley, Will Myrer, Liam Ferguson, Hannah Mountford, Marion Synishin and Ashleigh McKenna.  Swimming Canada’s 2019 Speedo Eastern Championships take place in Quebec City from April 11 to 14.

Several HTAC parents and swimmers officiated and timed at this past weekend’s 2019 AUS Subway Swimming Championships held at Dalplex.  On behalf of Swim Nova Scotia, thank you to the volunteers!

AA Winter Champs, hosted by Wolfville Tritons, February 15 to 17 at Acadia University, Wolfville

If you are able to help on deck, email Lynn Sitland (lsitland@live.com) and copy our Chair of Officials (officials@htac.ca) your preferred position and availability.

Novatech #4, hosted by Shearwater Bluefins, February 23 at Centennial Pool, Halifax

Senior Officials, please email York Friesen (yorkfriesen@gmail.com).  Timers, email Nicole Humble (nhumble08@gmail.com) and Dustin LindenSmith (dus8n@lindensmith.com) and copy our Chair of Officials (officials@htac.ca)

As always, HTAC volunteer points apply.  Information about these meets (including accommodation information) is available at HTAC.ca

2019 David Fry Provincial Swimming Championships

HTAC and Swim Nova Scotia are co-hosting the 2019 David Fry Provincial Swimming Championships.  Taking place February 28 to March 3 at Dalplex, we expect 250+ swimmers from across Nova Scotia, Newfoundland, PEI and New Brunswick, along with their coaches, parents and supporters.  The meet package and qualifying standards are available on HTAC.ca

Our committee has been hard at work preparing for this championship.  There are many ways you can help make this a success, and we hope we can count on all Trojan members!

Swim Meet Program - Sell ads to earn credit to your swim account

We are producing a meet program and selling ad space.  Members who sell ads in the program are credited half of the ad revenue – either as credit to their account or as volunteer points (1 point = $50).  For example, members who sell a ½ page ad at $100 would receive $50 credit to their account or earn 1 volunteer point.  The remaining portion of the ad sale goes to the team.

Approach your favourite café. Ask your employer.  Do you lunch every day at a certain bakery?  What about your real estate agent? Is your church hosing a March Break camp? You could even buy an ad announcing support your swimmer!

Ad rates are: quarter-page (4.25” X 5.5”) - $50, half-page (8.5” X 5.5”) - $100, full-page (8.5” X 11”) - $200.  Please send completed black and white ad in high-resolution JPG or PDF to Lorna Bateman at lornajbateman@gmail.com by February 21.  Payment arrangements for advertisers can be made with Maggie at office@htac.ca

Volunteers

We are looking for volunteers to fill shifts for the canteen and hospitality room.  This is also a great opportunity for younger swimmers to watch a long course championship meet and be part of the action.  Cheering encouraged!  Please message evans.leigh@gmail.com with interest and availability.

Points – Canteen lead (2 points), Canteen & Hospitality volunteers (1 point per shift)

Timers and officials are needed, as they are for all swim meets.  Please contact Kelley Polley (Kelley@polycorp.co) and copy our Chair of Officials (officials@htac.ca) with your preferred role and availability. Timers and officials will receive a parking pass to the Dalplex parking lot for Friday.  Spectators must use the meters or pay and display ($2 per hour/ $16 per day) or find parking on side streets.

Points – Timer (1 point per session), Official (2 points per session)

We will be running a Silent Auction as a team fundraiser from Thursday to Sunday and need some volunteers to help set up the tables, staff the tables during the sessions, and help with gathering payment and distributing items to the successful bidders.  We have secured some great items from spa treatments, dinners, swim suits, rounds of golf, overnight stays, concert and theatre tickets, and more!

Points – 1 point per session

Canteen and Hospitality Food Donations

Hospitality lead Leigh Evans has emailed each training group assigned food items.  If you prefer, you can opt to e-transfer funds to Leigh and she will purchase what we need. Please contact Leigh (evans.leigh@gmail.com) for more information.

Meet Clothing

Swimmers can choose to purchase a 2019 David Fry Championship t-shirt.  Pre-order your $25 shirt by February 17 by emailing equipment@htac.ca

HTAC Travel Fundraising Policy

The Board recently approved a new policy that will support Swim Families who wish to fundraise to offset travel expenses for championship meets.  Families are welcome to fundraise to offset costs associated with travel meets.  The policy can be found on HTAC.ca under About HTAC.  Any questions can be directed to Board member Denise Green (dmgreenhfx@gmail.com)

Swim a Thon 2019

Our annual Swim a Thon will take place on April 27, 2019 from 8:30 to 10:30am at Dalplex.  This will be a fun event and an important team fundraiser.  The organizing committee had their first meeting this week - watch for details coming your way soon.
