Malia Borg - Macalester College in St. Paul, Minnesota
1) Why did you choose your school?
I chose Macalester because of the environment I felt on campus. I loved the interactions between
professor and student and how comfortable I felt on campus. Being with the swim team showed me what
a day would normally be like which really gave me the best evidence of what I would experience in
college. The small class size and placement in the large city of Minneapolis also led me to choose the
school as I would have lots of opportunities to make friends and connections outside the classroom.
2) What are you going to miss about Charleston?
I know I will miss my sister and my dog of course I will definitely miss the beach and some good
southern food like grits and Cheerwine.
3) What are you going to take away from your time at SCSC?
I am going to take away from SCSC how valuable a team environment can be. Having your
teammates with you at practice everyday can create such strong connections. I have really enjoyed the
time I’ve spent on buses, at meets, in the middle of sets with these people. They have made me laugh and
that has made the time spend in the water so much better. SCSC has also shown me how to be a better
athlete and take accountability for my own success whether that be making up practices or warming up
when I need to. Swimming will always be my first love.
4) What are you most looking forward to when you go off to
It’s kinda weird since I am going so far away that I won’t have many connections to home. I am
excited for learning about so many different places. Macalester has a high international
population of students which hopefully means I get to make a lot of new friends. I am excited to
be able to focus on only a couple classes as well as college swimming. I am also planning on
doing water polo in college, so that will be a fun new experience. I am also looking forward to
seeing snow for long periods of time because I have never had that before.
5) At what age did you start swimming year round?
I started swimming at age 6 for SMRT. Mostly because my parents needed something to get me
out of the house and to tire me out, so I would stop bouncing off the walls.
6) Are you going to be swimming in College?
Yup, I will be swimming!
7) Any idea what you will major in?
I hope to major in Human Biology with a concentration in Global Public Health Education and
maybe throw some French in there.
