ECA swimmers set records at 2019 NCS 14 & Under Age Group Championships
East Carolina Aquatics sent 15 swimmers to Cary, NC to compete at the 2019 North Carolina Swimming 14 & Under Age Group Championships. Several swimmers had top 16 swims and a few team records were set over the course of the 4-day event.
Owen Lin won 5 events and set 2 team records. He won the Boys 10 & Under 100 IM with a time of 1:08.73 and the 50 Free in a blazing 27.39. He tied for 1st in the 50 Fly in a new team record time of 29.33. The previous team record of 29.42 was set by Will Barker in March 2014. He took the top spot in the 200 Free touching in 2:12.82. Lin won the 100 Free cracking the 1-minute mark in 59.47. He broke the team record in the 50 Breast with a 2nd place swim of 35.85. The previous record of 36.73 was set by Ezra Zapler in October. He narrowly missed the team record in the 100 Fly with a blazing time of 1:07.26, which earned another 2nd place finish. He had remarkable performance in the 200 IM, placing 2nd in 2:30.20. He added a 14th place finished in the 50 Back at 33.38. After such an outstanding meet, Lin was the High Point Award Winner for 10 & Under Boys with an accumulated total of 152.5 points.
Emma Hastings threw down a new team record in the 13-14 Girls 1000 Free with a 3rd place time of 10:12.87. She beat her own team record of 10:25.87 from last March and was only 1 second off the overall Senior team record. She shaved 2 seconds off her own team record in the 13-14 1650 Free posting a time of 17:29.72 with a 5th place finish. She won the “B” Final in the 13-14 200 Fly in a new team record time of 2:08.52, beating her own record of 2:08.81 from December. She went on to a 3rd place finish in the 500 Free with an awesome time of 4:59.82. She also competed in finals in the 13-14 200 Free and 400 IM, placing 5th in both events clocking 1:53.04 and 4:33.22 respectively.
Luke McCarthy placed 5th in the 11-12 Boys 200 Breast in a time of 2:31.59, breaking his own team record time of 2:34.05 from December. McCarthy also finished 5th in the 100 Breast in a time of 1:12.07 and the 500 Free in 5:21.93. He placed 6th in the 11-12 Boys 400 IM with a time of 4:50.86, dropping 8 seconds. He finished 8th in the 11-12 Boys 200 Free in 2:02.17 and he added an 11th place finish in the 200 IM with a time of 2:18.02. McCarthy also placed 14th in the 100 Free in 55.73 and the 100 IM in a time of 1:04.34.
Nathan Michalowicz finished 7th in the 11-12 50 Back in an impressive time of 29.05. He placed 8th in the 11-12 Boys 50 Free in 25.11. He was 9th in the 100 Back clocking 1:03.19 and the 200 Free at 2:02.56. He was also 11th in the 100 Free in 54.99 and finished 13th in the 11-12 200 Back in a time of 2:16.60.
Ezra Zapler had a very fast 50 Breast in 32.36 to place 7th. He placed 13th in the 50 Free touching in 25.97 and was 15th in the 100 Breast at 1:13.65.
Brycen Andrews was 11th in the 10 & Under 50 Fly in a time of 32.58 and 16th in the 200 Free in 2:24.67.
Emily Armen placed 16th in the 11-12 200 Free in 2:06.94 and was also 16th in the 50 Free in a time of 26.57.
The 11-12 Boys 200 Free Relay of McCarthy, Michalowicz, Zapler, and Matej Roth finished 4th in a new team record time 3:49.99. The previous record of 3:58.09 was set in 2015. The same quartet swam the 200 Medley Relay placed 10th in a time of 1:59.09. The 11-12 Boys 200 Free Relay of McCarthy, Zapler, Michalowicz, and Tiago Marlow placed 11th touching in 1:47.33. That group finished 14th in the 400 Medley Relay with a time of 4:32.23.
Kristen Ivey, Brooke Despres, Grace McCarthy, and Emma Hastings teamed up for three 13-14 relays. The girls placed 12th with a time of 8:08.95. They placed 16th in the 200 Free Relay at 1:44.39 and the 400 Free Relay at 3:47.77. Helen Dennison joined Ivey, Despres, and Hastings in the 2 Medley Relays. They finished 16th clocking 1:57.75. They finished just out of scoring in the 400 in 17th at 4:16.54.
Grace McCarthy and Kristen Ivey’s best individual performances came in the 13-14 1650 Free where they placed 24th and 31st respectively. Matej Roth raced to 29th in the 11-12 Boys 50 Free in 27.02.
Madison Bowen also competed in the meet, her best performance an 18th place finish in the 50 Free at 26.71. Clara Pierce Smith finished 18th in the 10 & Under 50 Free in 30.15 as well.
