NOVATECH MEET #4 THIS SAT FEB 23RD

A warm thanks to those parents who came out for our NovaTech Meet planning meetings on Monday and Tuesday of this week. It looks like most of our duties are now covered for this meet. In addition to the many parents and Age-Group swimmers who will be marshalling and timing, extra thanks goes to Paul Peterson for running the Canteen, to Dave LeBlanc for stocking the Hospitality Room, and to Danny Bouchard for doing the Meet Programs with me.

We've also just learned that the head of Swim Nova Scotia, Bette El-Hawary, has decided to attend our meet that day and help to oversee its management. It will be great to have her there for support and questions, and it's also a nice chance for us to show how much parental support our club can bring out for the meet.

A note re Officiating in general: With declining enrollment in the sport and the increasingly busy schedule of modern families, the sport of competitive swimming in this province is in need of more volunteer officials than ever. It is also usually true that being an official on deck at meets is MUCH more interesting than watching from the stands. I will be offering a free clinic for Stroke and Turn Judge in the coming weeks for any parent who is interested in expanding their role on deck.

STORM POLICY

A general reminder that in case a storm closes Shearwater Pool, we will update the club's Google Calendar and publish a news item on our website and by e-mail by 3 PM on an anticipated storm day. You could also contact the pool directly if you want to see if it's open: The front desk number is 902-720-1071 and the CFB Shearwater Storm Line is 902-720-1305.

LOTTO69 FUNDRAISER RAFFLE AT KEIZER'S FRESHMART

We've recently learned that John Keizer has selected the Shearwater Bluefins Swim Club to be the recipient of the proceeds of Freshmart's Lotto69 raffle for the month of February. If you purchase a ticket, you have a chance of winning half the monthly pot yourself, with the other half being donated to the club. Tickets are $1 each to a maximum of $2,000 ($1,000 goes to the winner and $1,000 goes to the club).

If you have a chance to pop into his store to buy a ticket and/or some other supplies, please do so before the end of February!

Coach Angela's Report from the AA's Championships in Wolfville Feb 15-17:

Well the valley never disappoints! What a weekend the Bluefins had. Exceptional swims by the team!

One of the highlights of the weekend was the 12 and under girls, winning the 4x50 relay and the 4x100 free relay. It was sure nice watching them pass our most rivaled team. Way to go Elizabeth, Jorja, Ella and Faith! I'm so proud of these girls.

Elizabeth went on to get her AAA times this weekend and Jorja now has one AAA time and is 3/10 off another AAA time. We are on our way!

The team building continued off the pool deck as three of our families rented a house and hosted the after swimming gatherings. They provided amazing meals, including a full turkey dinner, delicious back ribs and plenty of great conversation. It is this type of atmosphere that allows the swimmers to relax during the off time and be able to produce in the pool. A big thank you to those families.

Here is a recap of the weekend's top finishes:
  • Josh: 50 free 5th, 100 free 6th, 200 breast 5th,50 fly 4th, 100 Fly 3rd
