The second chapter of the WTSC Championship Season was another success story, with the Age Group State team turning in many memorable performances on their way to an 19th place finish overall. Leading the way were Liam Fahey and Sarah McPherson, who both earned runner-up finishes on the weekend. Sarah finished second in the state in the 50 & 100 Breaststroke, earned an additional trip to the podium in the 50 Backstroke (8th) and scored in the 100 Freestyle (9th), 50 Freestyle (11th) and 200 IM (15th). Liam was the state runner-up in the 50 Breaststroke, finished third in the 100 Breaststroke, earned a third medal in the 50 Freestyle (5th) and scored in the 200 IM (11th) and the 200 & 500 Freestyle (14th). Liam’s times in the 50 & 100 Breaststroke were both Zones cuts – the first of his career – as well as new 11-12 boys club records.
Sarah wasn’t done with the hardware after her individual events, however. Sarah teamed with Avery Aiello, Kayley Spicer and Lillian Tabor to finish third in the 200 Freestyle Relay and fourth in the 200 Medley Relay. Avery (15th – 50 Butterfly) and Kayley (14th – 50 Breaststroke) also contributed individual points to the team performance.
Brody Friend found his way to the podium twice on the weekend, finishing eighth in the 50 Freestyle and teaming with Ayden Fahey, Colin Parker and Jack Steadham to finish fifth in the 200 Freestyle Relay. The same quartet also finished 11th in the 200 & 400 Medley Relays. Brody added a 10th place finish in the 100 Freestyle to his weekend, while Colin scored in four individual events, finishing 10th in the 50 Freestyle with a new Senior State cut (the first of his career), 13th in the 100 Freestyle and 15th in the 200 Freestyle and 200 IM.
Emily Buening and Amelia Smith each scored in three events on the weekend. Emily had a top finish of 10th in the 1650 Freestyle and finished 13th in the 400 IM and 14th in the 1000 Freestyle. Amelia had a top finish of 13th in the 100 Freestyle, making a new Zones cut in the process, and finished 15th in the 50 Freestyle and 16th in the 100 Butterfly.
Additional outstanding swims were turned in on the weekend by Ruby Brown, Charlotte Buening, Katie Countryman, Carlise Leppert and Annie Wolfe. An updated Honor Roll is posted on the club website and at the pool. Check it out for these highlights and many more from a successful weekend at Age Group State.
