The Westfield Area ‘Y’ Devilfish Swim Team sent 31 qualifying members to the 13 & Over NJ YMCA State Swimming Championships, held at Franklin & Marshall College in Lancaster, PA on March 7th-10th. At this highly competitive meet, 15 swimmers qualified for finals, 4 National cuts were earned and 2 WY records were broken, one of them twice.
Cuts for the YMCA Short Course National meet were attained by Julia McGann in the 200 Back (2:07.07), Barney Veres in the 200 Breast (2:11.64) and Bridget Thomas in the 100 Free (53.15) and 1650 Free (17:30.41).
Abby McKinney broke the Girls 15-18 200 Free record, going a 1:54.34 in a close swim off. Shortly after, Bridget Thomas edged this standard downward to a 1:54.18, and Matt Swenson bettered his prior record in the WY Boys 13-14 1000 Free, finishing in 10:00.11. Individual point leaders were Bridget Thomas (60), Abby McKinney (45.5), Matt Swenson (32) and TJ Walsh (17). The following athletes made finals in their respective events:

15-18 Girls: Julia McGann (19th 200 Back); Abby McKinney (5th 200 Fly, 6th 100 Fly, 7th 100 Free, 10th 200 Free, 20th 50 Free); Isabella Nicholson (13th 500 Free, 21st 200 IM, 23rd 100 Breast); Bridget Thomas (3rd 500 Free, 4th 1650 Free, 5th 1000 Free, 8th 200 Free, 13th 100 Free)
