Update for March Break Schedule + David Fry Meet Report
Dear Bluefins,

Please review the following short items in this last update before March Break.

MARCH BREAK SCHEDULE

Thanks to all who responded to our request for your March Break availability. As it turned out, fewer than 10 swimmers were available for most of the break, and our coaching availability was also quite limited.

Therefore, from this Fri Mar 15th through Sun Mar 24th 2019 inclusive, all SBSC practices are cancelled for March Break except for one:
  • Mon Mar 18th @ 5-7 PM: Open practice for all roster groups with Coach Alicia
The club's Google Calendar is also up to date with these changes.

COACHES MEET REPORT FROM AAA DAVID FRY CHAMPIONSHIPS

Our team brought six athletes to the competition held at the Dalplex pool in Halifax at the end of February. We did exceptionally well with only those six swimmers: 5 of them made it to finals and 6 club records were broken!

This was a very exciting meet to be a part of, swimming against some of the best swimmers in Atlantic Canada and Ontario. We were so happy to see our athletes step it up and go after best times and personal goals.

Club records broken:
  • Alex Bouchard: 100 and 200 backstroke
  • Jessie Collett: 100 free + 50, 100, and 200 backstroke
Personal best times were set by all of our swimmers.

Making the podium for medals were:
  •  Alex Bouchard: 3rd in 200 back,2nd in 100 fly,2nd in 200 IM and 2nd in 400 IM
  •  Jessie Collett: 3rd in 100 free final with a gutsy push to the wall
Alex is currently ranked #1 in Canada for 11 year old boys in the 200 IM and 400 free!

We're sure they would be happy to bring their medals in to show the team.

We are very proud of all our athletes, it takes a lot of training and dedication to post these results. We recognize your hard work and are delighted with the results.

Year-to-date our Bluefins have set 24 club records.

Well done Bluefins!

Coaches Angela and Jay

UPCOMING MEETS

We're blessed with a short break until our competition schedule resumes again. Here's what's coming up next:
  • Weekend of Mar 29-30 in Sydney, NS: AA Short Course Development Meet #2 ( more info)
Meet entries deadline is Mon Mar 25th. The 11 swimmers who are eligible for this meet have already been e-mailed about securing accommodations, and they should all please watch OnDeck or the TU website to review their meet entries that day.

  • Sat Mar 29 at Dalplex: AAA Long Course Meet #3 ( more info)
As of March 15th, meet sanction is still pending, so we still don't have the events list yet. However, the meet entries deadline is still Mon Mar 25th, the day after we return from March Break. Coaches and AAA swimmers should all be watching for updates that day, and if any swimmers know now that they cannot attend that meet, please contact me or the coaches at your earliest.

  • Sat Apr 13th at Centennial: NovaTech Meet #5
This meet has also not been sanctioned yet, but the general format and timings are expected to be the same as the other NT meets we've had this season.

REMINDER FROM SHEARWATER PSP

Our pool's Aquatic Coordinator, Neiley Terrio, has passed along a reminder to all of our parents that it is the policy at PSP that all children under 13 years old must be under the effective supervision of a parent or guardian at all times. There have been reports from front desk staff that some of the younger siblings of SBSC swimmers have been running through the halls and on the gym floor during swim practice. They have asked us to remind all of our parents that this is strictly prohibited. Thank you for your consideration.

NEW:  ELECTRONICS-FREE POLICY AT SWIM MEETS

Our coaches have asked us to implement a new electronics-free policy for our swimmers at our upcoming swim meets. They have requested that our swimmers no longer bring any electronic devices, cell phones, tablets or laptops to be used on deck during competition.

Aside from the electrical hazards involving water and electronics, we have observed that some swimmers have had trouble maintaining their concentration on the events, and have missed their races as a result of being distracted by their device. Please review this policy with your child before the next meet, and remind them that we expect their attention to be focused on the events that they and their teammates are swimming next. Thank you!

LAVIGNE FAMILY DEPARTURE

Many of you may already know that the Lavigne family has decided to make a change to their club affiliation. After the David Fry meet concluded, they transferred from the Shearwater Bluefins to the Dartmouth Crusaders.

Gabe Lavigne is the second in his family to have had a lengthy stint with our club; his older brother Jeremy also swam with SBSC for several years. We'll miss both Gabe and his dad Pat, who has acted as our AG Team Manager and who has also volunteered for countless sessions of officiating on deck. We greatly appreciate their contribution to the Shearwater Bluefins over the years, and we wish them all the best at their new home club. Please give them your best if you see them on deck at the next AAA meet!
