ECA sent a small but mighty squad to the 2019 Eastern Section Southern Zone Age Group Championships, held at the Georgia Tech Aquatic Center in Atlanta, Ga, March 14-17. The team placed 19th out of 98 scoring teams, accumulating 299 points behind the Herculean effort of 10-year-old Owen Lin.
Lin won Gold in the 10 & Under Boys 200 Free in an awesome time of 2:07.41. He took Silver in the 50 Free, 100 Free, 50 Fly, 100 Fly, and 200 IM. His 50 Fly time of 28.68 eclipsed his own previous team record of 29.33 from February. His time of 1:04.52 in the 100 Fly demolished the 2013 record of 1:07.06 by Will Barker. He flirted with team records in the 50 Free at 26.76, 100 Free at 59.56, and 200 IM in an impressive 2:28.69. He earned Bronze in the 50 Breast in a new team record time of 35.34, lowering his own mark from February by half a second from 35.85. He also won Bronze in the 100 IM in a blazing 1:09.35.
Luke McCarthy, 12, had a great meet with several Finals appearances and excelled in the distance free events. McCarthy took Silver in the 11-12 Boys 1650 Free in 18:25.43. He earned Bronze in the 1000 Free 10:47.10. He also finished 7th in the 500 Free 5:21.67 and was 8th in the 200 Breast in 2:33.51. He placed 10th in the 200 Free in 2:01.76, 12th in the 100 Free clocking 56.07, 16th in the 100 Breast touching in 1:11.77, and 18th in the 50 Breast finishing 33.38.
Ezra Zapler, 11, was impressive this weekend as well. He placed 11th in the timed final 200 Breast in 2:37.86. He made Finals in the 50 Free, finishing in an 12th place time of 25.49. He also placed 16th in the 50 Breast in 33.03 and 18th in the 100 Breast in 1:12.30.
Emily Armen, 12, competed in 4 events with her best finish coming in the 11-12 Girls 200 Free, clocking 2:07.54 for 29th.
Kristen Ivey, 14, swam 5 events with a best finish of 26th in the 13-14 1000 Free in a time of 11:21.20.
ECA will wrap up the short course season as host of the East Coast Swim League Championships at Minges Natatorium, March 29-31.
