Announcing Our 2019 Coaching Staff

In case you missed the announcement in the last newsletter, we are extremely excited to welcome Coach Nick Ward to the Stingrays! He comes to us with over five years of coaching and ten years of teaching experience. He is currently a special education teacher in the Baltimore County Public Schools and lives in Hanover, PA. Nick was an assistant coach for the Gettysburg Sharks, a YWCA team, and has also coached a variety of other sports at many different age and ability levels.  Nick has many years of swimming experience including at the collegiate level.  He swam at Penn State Altoona on the Division III NCAA team and then at Penn State University at the club level. Nick and his wife met while swimming at Penn State University and they have 4 children.

We welcome back coach Alex Hanson.  He has participated in swimming since the age of 6.  Alex swam as a Stingray for 8 years and was eventually selected as a coach for the team.  He served as both an assistant and head coach and also taught group and private swim lessons for our team.  Alex joined the CCY Piranhas in 2008 and has been coaching there ever since. This will be Alex's 6th summer coaching the Stingrays.  With a day job as a software engineer, Alex will coach at our evening practices and swim meets.

Joining our coaching staff this year is Wendy Schneider.  She began swimming as a Stingray at the age of 8 and taught in our lesson program for four summers. Wendy also swam for the CCY Piranhas and is currently a member of the Penn State Club Swim Team.  She studies Health Policy and Administration at Penn State.  This will be Wendy's first year on the team as an Assistant Coach, and she is excited for the new opportunities involved.  Welcome Wendy!

Also joining our coaching staff is Michael Brant. Michael has been a swim coach in Delaware for the past 7 years.  He coached with the Westminster Dolphins and the North Star Swim Club.  He is currently a coach at the Green Terror Aquatic Club.   Michael has been a swimmer since the age of 4 and is finishing his last collegiate season as the McDaniel Men’s Swim Team senior team captain. Michael will graduate from McDaniel College in May with a degree in Kinesiology with a minor in education.  Michael spends most of his free time watching swimming videos on technique, workouts, and news regarding anything swimming related.  Michael is also into CrossFit, swimming and running. He is currently training for triathlons, 5Ks and half marathons this summer.

We’re still waiting to find out if Natalie Wasicko’s work schedule will permit her to return as a Stingray coach this season.

Stay tuned for additional coaching staff announcements in the coming weeks.

Communication

In order to streamline communication with the board and coaches please submit all questions to our team email, wststingrays@gmail.org.  Please do not reply to this email as this may cause a delay in getting your questions answered.

The board and coaches will disseminate information to the team by the following means:

  • The team newsletters
  • The team website
  • Email
  • Our private Facebook page

Swim Lessons Program

Registration is open for our swim lessons program.  Don’t forget our swim lessons program supports the swim team and keeps swim team fees low.  If you have friends considering swim lessons for their children, please encourage them to look at our program.  Information on our swim lessons program can be found on our website.

Team Suits/Uniforms

Our new team suit this season will be the Speedo Modern Matrix (pictured below).  We do not require team members to wear the team suit, although it is highly encouraged.  Each member of the team is given a team t-shirt and a latex team swim cap (silicone team caps are available for purchase).  We request that all members wear their team distributed swim caps (or optional silicone cap) and t-shirts to all swim meets.  This helps with identification of team members and makes us look like a more cohesive team.
