9 New 'Y' Records Set at 2019 Short Course Junior Olympics

The Westfield Area ‘Y’ Devilfish Swim Team sent a contingent of 28 qualifying athletes to the 2019 Ages 9-14 New Jersey Swimming Short Course Junior Olympics, held at Rutgers University in New Brunswick on March 22nd-24th. This competitive meet bore 9 new Westfield YMCA records, and Emily Constable made two Girls National cuts in the 100 (1:06.99) & 200 (2:25.87) Breast. These cuts were also Girls 13-14 Y records.

Two additional individual records were broken by Patrick Miller in the Boys 11-12 50 Back (28.08) and 100 Fly (1:00.62). Five relay teams helped alter the record board: Girls 13-14 400 Free Relay of Viv Jeckell, Lauren Lane, Emily Constable and Clare Logan (3:45.05), Girls 13-14 400 Medley Relay of Lane, Constable, Jeckell, Logan (4:05.96), Boys 11-12 400 Free Relay of Cole Sharkey, JD Twilley, Logan Swenson, Patrick Miller (3:56.46), Boys 11-12 400 Medley Relay of Miller, Twilley, Sharkey, Swenson (4:22.24), Boys 13-14 400 Free Relay of Matt Swenson, Will Crall, Christian Tedesco, Colin Kavanagh (3:29.20).

The following swimmers attained top-16 finishes:

9-10 Boys: Josh Cetin (6th 100 Fly, 8th 50 Free, 50 Fly, 9th 100 IM, 12th 100 Free, 14th 200 IM)

11-12 Boys: Charlie Jeckell (9th 1650 Free); Patrick Miller (1st 100 Back, 2nd 50 Back, 5th 100 Fly, 7th 200 IM)

13-14 Girls: Emily Constable (3rd 100 Breast, 5th 200 Breast); Viv Jeckell (7th 50 Free); Lauren Lane (8th 200 Back); Clare Logan (5th 100 Free, 6th 50 Free, 7th 100 Back, 13th 200 Free, 14th 200 Back)

13-14 Boys: Will Crall (11th 400 IM, 14th 200 IM, 15th 200 Breast); Colin Kavanagh (5th 100 Breast, 200 IM, 7th 200 Breast, 10th 100 Back, 12th 50 Free, 14th 100 Free); Christian Tedesco (10th 200 Breast); Aidan Troy (13th 100 Breast)

The Devilfish 9-14 Junior Olympic Team also included Emma Crall, Kaylie Gao, Alex Giangone, Lila Griffith, Will Heinze, Jane Kavanagh, Dylan Lagrimas, Billy Maguire, Logan Partridge, Danny Pierce, Catherine Ritter, Carsen Sharkey and Jack Young.
