History of Holtrey Classic
LESD is honored to host the Holtrey Classic meet next weekend at SPIRE Institute. This well respected and highly competitive Long Course meet is named after our former long-time, legendary, Head Coach, Jerry Holtrey. Do you know the history of LESD?
The Lake Erie Coca’s swim club was founded in 1965 by then head swim Coach Ron Johnson. Coach Johnson saw firsthand the lack of organized swim clubs in the area and wanted to help teach and train the areas local swimmers. Ron coached the team until 1966 before leaving to coach the Mexican Olympic Team around 1968, when Jerry Holtrey took over the team. Until Jerry took over in 1967, the Lake Erie Coca’s was an all-boys swim team. In addition to expanding the team to include girls, the Lake Erie Coca’s were renamed the Lake Erie Silver Dolphins (LESD). The team went on a historic streak under Jerry’s guidance by winning almost every age group championship meet, both long course and short course, over the ensuing decades. Today, LESD is one of the oldest and proudest USA Swim Teams in the United States and it continues to build on its traditions of swimmer excellence, both in and out of the water. Some of Holtrey’s coaching career accolades include:
- Jerry has developed over 500 All-American swimmers at Hawken School. His High School Swim Team has won 25 state team titles and as of 2016 his girl’s team has won 16 straight team titles.
- He has had swimmers qualify for every Olympic Trials from 1968 thru 2008 from his USA team.
- Coached multiple Olympians from age group years through Olympic experience, Melanie Valerio and Diana Munz, along with open water champion Erica Rose. He also coached Sharon Wickman and Matt Vogel during their age group years, both of which went on to win Olympic Gold in 1968 and 1976 respectively.
- Jerry has coached two Pan Pac teams and has been Head Coach of the USA Junior teams to Barcelona, Spain and Melbourne, Australia.
- His swimmers have won 24 individual event titles at Senior Nationals and have had swimmers capture high point awards at both Senior Nationals and World Open Water Championships.
- USA Swimming has published some of Holtrey’s workouts for coach development.
- Jerry has been inducted into the Swimming Hall of Fame in Ohio and in his home town of Huntington, Indiana. Greater Cleveland Sports Hall of fame and he was elected ASCA Hall of Fame.
So next weekend's meet will be special to all swimmers but most importantly our Silver Dolphins, as we continue to set the bar high for competitive swimming not just as athletes, but also individuals.

Welcome to LESD
Please welcome Coach Joe officially to the LESD Family. He will be coaching with the Hawken practice locations. Although he is new to USA Swimming coaching, he has an extensive background with the sport. Learn more about Joe below and please make sure to check out the updated online coaches bios for all our experienced staff!
Personal swimming experience: "I started my swimming career at 4 years old with Byron Davis (former LESD Alumni and Record Holder) at the Euclid Y. I swam for John Carroll University and was the 1992 and 1993 NCAA Division III National Champion in the 100 Breaststroke. Additionally, I was an 8 time All American and held six school records. I am being inducted into John Carroll's Hall of Fame in October of this year."
One takeaway you want to pass onto your swimmers: "Swimming builds strong character. I hope swimming helps my swimmers learn that hard work pays off - not only in swimming, but in anything we do in life. I want them to learn to win graciously and lose even more graciously but most of all, I want the swimmers to have fun!
Other Interesting facts: "I enjoy golfing, cooking and spending time with my family."
