FAQ’s for Beginner Swimmers/Parents

Where should I sit?
There is space for set up of our MAX canopies outside. Please sit together with the team, AS a team. This makes it easier for coaches to find athletes and brings us together as a MAX Family!

What does “timing” mean?
When you find your child’s athlete’s name below, it means you are responsible to time the meet in that chair for 1 hour. You will be responsible for pressing the button and stopwatch when athletes finish the race. Many times, it is the best seat in the house! Please be on time to relieve the parent in front of you.

I don’t see my athletes name in the timing assignments, what does that mean?
It means you have not been assigned to work the meet and will probably be responsible to time at the next meet. You must arrive at the WARM UP time listed on the first page!

Do I have to be there for warm up?
A resounding absolutely YES! Warm up is a mandatory part of racing. It ensures your athlete gets used to the pool facility including turns and finishes to help not get DQ’d. More importantly, it correctly warms-up the athletes to prevent any injuries they could incur from not warming up properly. Please have your athlete to warm up ONTIME!

My athlete got DQ’d, they must not be learning anything in workout, right?
Wrong. ‘DQ’s’, or disqualifications, are a very normal part of the learning process. Of course, as coaches and parents we do not want to see them disqualify and we work hard during workout to prevent this. However, DQ’s are a normal part of the learning process for all teams and athletes involved. The best thing for the parent to do is help guide the athlete to the coach so the coach can correct the habit that will result in workout changes that will result in no DQ’s at the next meet.

What should my child do before, during and after the race?
Before the race, the athlete should check in with the coach to give them their heat and lane information. The coach will then give the athlete any last-minute pointers or reminders from their habits during workout. During the race they should make sure they race FAST! After the race the athlete should come back to the coach to get splits, guidance on how to improve, and then warm down.

Do I have to stay the whole day?
No. As soon as you are done with your last race and have no timing responsibilities left, simply check in with your coach and you may leave.
