Canadian Junior Championships - Day 1

25 July 2019 (Repsol Sports Centre, Calgary) - Day 1 of the Cascade hosted Canadian Junior Championships are in the books and it was a hard fought night for the medals. Events on the day were the 800m freestyle timed finals, the 100m butterfly, the 200m backstroke, and the mixed 4x100m freestyle relay.

Our first medals came from the ever reliable Ella Varga in the 200m event where she was up against a very fast field that saw her contend against a number of her Canadian Development Team members and one World Junior team member. The big threat was coming from Regan Rathwell who was in the “A” final at the Canadian Swimming Trials in April where Ella swam in the “B” finals. Rathwell took it out hard and fast in 1:04.3 to Ella’s 1:06.9 to the 100m mark. At that point though is when Varga turned on the jets and started closing ground on Regan eating up real estate between them with every single stroke. Despite great last 50 splits of 34.4 and 34.1 it wasn’t quite enough to get back on Rathwell who took the gold in 2:14.4 to Varga’s very solid silver medal swim of 2:15.48.

For our boys we had Sebastian Somerset & Laird Douglas in the “A” final. Sebastian, no stranger to the podium in this event, had his hands full up against a very strong field which included a couple of his World Junior teammates. Seb was out controlled in 1:01.45 before brining it back in 1:05 to finish in the bronze medal position in 2:06.62. Laird finished 8th, 2:08.26, a best time and Canadian 2020 Olympic Trials qualifying cut.

Cascade finished with two relays in the “A” final of the mixed 4x100 Free Relay (mixed relays are fairly new events on the sked, introduced a couple of years ago in the preparation lead up to the 2020 Olympic Games where they will make their big league debut).
