Week 5 - Managing Stress

Happy Sunday  Bengal Families! 

I hope you all had a relaxing first weekend back in the routine of school! So far we have had an amazing week of practices and have stepped up to the challenges we have had to be undefeated so far! It is hard to believe but we are already 1/4 of the way through the season! We have our great habits formed, know how to fuel our bodies, have our goals set, we know how to prepare for meets.Now it's time to talk about managing stress! Settling into a new routine can be difficult and with school starting again this can create a new level of stress and anxiety for athletes. I want to make sure we are setting them up for success in and out of the water. 

One great wayto help manage stress is to have a  PLAN! I want them to have a plan for even the routine things each day. It helps keep anxiety at bay when they know when they will wake up, what their day looks like, when they will eat dinner and when they will do their homework. Even if they don't need all of the homework time, they have it scheduled and know whats coming every day. During our very short season, their social lives may revolve around the team,  and that is ok! Being disciplined is a skill that will help them to have a successful school year after the season ends.

Journaling is another great way to manage stress by getting it down on paper instead of carrying it around in their minds, which is why we journal after practice :) This has been a critical part of my stress management routine and I truly beleive in getting out of their brains and bodies and down on paper. 

We talked about fueling their bodies early in the season because of it is critical to mental AND physical health! Other great ways to manage stress include having a positive mental attitude, speaking with a trusted friend or adult, dancing to a favorite song, laughing, and doing excercise yoga as we do on Friday's are all healthy ways to manage stress! 

These athletes have rigerous schedules so it is also important that they are getting rest. Pulling all nighters and getting less then 8 hours of sleep does not set them up for success. Rest is part of training so it is critical they are getting enough sleep throughout the week.

This also means if they are sick, they need to stay home! We want them to train when they are healthy and with all of the germs about to be entered into the equation its critical that if they are sick, they stay home, rest up and come back to us at full strength ready to train!

We want healthy ways to manage stress when things get chaotic and avoid things like binge watching netflix with a unhealthy snacks. There are pressures all over the place (another reason I'm not on social media ;)) so we want them to be equipped with healthy ways to manage the stress and pressures all around them. We will talk more with athletes about healthy ways to manage stress thruoghout the week. 

Updates This Week 

Chipolte Fundraiser TOMORROW! - Tell your friends, family, co-workers, anyone you meet that lives in Blaine that we are having a fundraiser for Blaine Swim and Dive. At Chipolte you need to mention Blaine Swimming and Diving at the register so we can get credit for your order.  You can order online to avoid the line but make sure you "pay in store" so you can mention Blaine Swim and Dive! 

Booster Club Meeting - After you pick up your chipolte, you can head over to BHS for the Booster Club Meeting from 7-8:00pm at the High School! 

Athletes in the Water - We are having a bit of trouble getting athletes to get in the water on time. As a result we are shifting their meet events accordingly. It is difficult getting all 75 athletes into meet events and I want to make sure they are going to athletes who are fully prepared for the meet! If you have questions please let me know. 

Bengal Invite - Not every athelte will participate in Bengal Invite as it is a Varsity Invitational. I will have the atheltes who are participating in the meet by Wednesday! Those athletes who are participating are to be at Northdale by 9am to support our divers!

Monday:   Practice 3:30 - 5:30 (JV) 5:30-6:00 (Varsity)  Chipolte Fundraiser and Booster Club Meeting
Tuesday: Practice 3:30 - 5:30 (JV) 5:30-6:00 (Varsity)
Wednesday: Practice 3:30 - 5:30 (JV) 5:30-6:00 (Varsity)
Thursday: Home vs. Anoka Athletes Arrive by 3:45pm - Normal after school bussing
Friday: Practice 3:30 - 5:30 (JV) 5:30-6:00 (Varsity) and  Zen with Jen - Make sure you have workout clothes! 
Saturday Bengal Invite Diving @ 9pm Swimming @ 1pm




 

I am so proud of these athletes and want to make sure they are managing stress in healthy ways!
