There will be no Age Group practice at UD on Friday, September 27, due to a conflict.  Swimmers may utilize the Age Group practices at Pike Creek and New Castle that night.

There will be no Developmental practice at UD on Saturday, September 28, due to a conflict.  Swimmers may utilize the Developmental practice at New Castle that afternoon.

There will be no Developmental or Age Group practices at New Castle on Sunday, September 29, due to the team picnic.

As mentioned on Monday, PS DuPont is still closed for renovations.  At the moment, the pool will be ready next week, but we will confirm that when they give us the actual go-ahead.

TEAM PICNIC

The team picnic is this Sunday, September 29, from 1:30-4:30 PM.

The picnic is at Banning Park in Wilmington, northeast of Newport, off of Middleboro Road.  Delaware Swim Team has reserved Carey Pavilion, near the exit of the park.  This map shows the location of the pavilion within the park.

There is a playground just across the field for children to use while we have the picnic.

Please register for the picnic at delawareswimteam.com by clicking directly on the "Meets & Events" tab and selecting the Team Picnic.  You can also access the event directly here.  Use the Notes section to indicate how many in your family will be attending.  If you have any dietary needs (vegetarian, kosher, etc), please also mention that in the Notes section.  You may attend without registering, but signing up through the team website by September 27 allows Coach Matt to more accurately determine the amount of hamburgers, hot dogs, and drinks needed.

Please remember to mention any dietary needs, so enough food to accommodate those needs is bought.  Anyone needing vegetarian food, kosher food, or so on should make a note of their needs.  Please bring a side dish or dessert with you.

PINK OUT! A/BB/C MEET

The deadline to sign up for the Pink Out! A/BB/C meet is this Friday, September 27.  The meet is October 12-13.

For those of you new to winter swimming, we have two documents to help you with signing up for swim meets.  Both of these are available on the team website in the "Documents" tab.  Please use "How to signup for a meet" tutorial and "How to sign up for a meet" supplemental information to navigate through the process of entering your swimmer into a swim meet.  Please make sure to read the meet announcement, linked above.

Parents with questions about what events to put their swimmer in can either talk to their primary coach, or email Coach Matt at matthewa@delawareswimteam.com.

Pink Out! t-shirts and swim caps are available for order, with profits from the shirts and caps going to the Helen F. Graham Cancer Center in Christiana, DE.  You can order your t-shirts and swim caps here.  There is a hard deadline of September 30 to place your order; those two weeks between the deadline and the meet are needed in order to get the full team order ready before the start of the meet, since these items will be available for pick-up at the Pink Out! meets.  Prices are in the aforementioned link.

PINK OUT! MINI MEET

The deadline to sign up for the  Pink Out! Mini meet is this Friday, September 27.  The meet is October 13.

MEET VOLUNTEER POSITIONS

Volunteer positions for the Pink Out! A/BB/C Meet and Pink Out! Mini Meet will open next Wednesday, October 3, at 9:00 PM.  Positions will be open for registration until Thursday, October 10, at 11:59 PM.

As we have seen in the past, there is always a mad rush to get volunteer positions for the first meet.  Remember that there are 4 other team-hosted meet weekends, totaling 9 days and 23 sessions, so you do not need to panic and scramble to get as many volunteer positions as possible in this meet.  In fact, doing that and then having less volunteer work to do later in the year ends up being worse for the team as a whole, because then the team is in need of volunteers for more important meets.  Please plan on spreading out when you volunteer, so that you do a little bit all throughout the season.

With this being the first meet, there will be slightly more volunteer positions, to minimize any hiccups throughout the weekend.  Parents who have been with Delaware Swim Team are encouraged to introduce themselves to parents who are new to Delaware Swim Team, especially new parents working the same volunteer positions as themselves, and relay their past experience in that volunteer position to the new parents.

PARENTS' MEETING

The parents' meeting is tomorrow night, September 26.  The meeting will be at the Pike Creek location from 6:00-6:45 PM.  The meeting will be upstairs in the party room.  You can reach the party room by going up the stairs that you see when you immediately go through the front doors.

Topics to be discussed at the meeting include team gear such as team suits, team caps, and clothing orders; volunteering at swim meets, including how to sign up and what positions are needed at meets; the difference between a USA Swimming full membership and a USA Swimming flex membership; the swim meet schedule; and the floor will be open for questions not answered by the end of the meeting.

There will not be a chance to live-stream the meeting this year; anyone who does not have a chance to attend will have a chance to read meeting notes that will be sent out to the team a few days after the meeting.

PROSPECTIVE OFFICIALS MEETING

Want to help your swimmer, other young swimmers like your daughter or son, Delaware Swim Team, and youth sports in general?  Becoming a USA Swimming official is the biggest help you can provide.

Delaware Swim Team is hosting two officials from Middle Atlantic to discuss what is needed to become an official, and the benefits of being an official.  Additionally, Delaware Swim Team administrative staff will be on hand to go over the benefits provided by the team to parents that become officials through Delaware Swim Team.

Who would be ideal as an official?  If you fit one or more of these criteria, you may be an excellent official in the making:

~ Anyone with extensive experience as a swimmer himself/herself.  Anyone who swam competitively in college clearly has an understanding of what is legal and illegal with the four strokes and the turns and all.  This knowledge can translate into an intuition that may not be "learned".
~ Anyone who is good at interpreting rules or laws and forming a judgement.  This could be in a legal field, or from refereeing in another sport.
~ Anyone who has been attending swim meets for several years and can see a difference between swimmers doing a stroke legally and swimmers doing a stroke illegally.
~ Anyone who plans on having their swimmer participate in the sport for the next several years, and will thus be attending numerous swim meets.

TEAM GEAR

The administrative staff have begun to prepare team gear for the season: team suits, team caps, and clothing orders.

The online team store was originally up, but was taken down to add even more items for purchase.  There are also some kinks with various items that need to be sorted out.

Suit fittings will be done at the Pike Creek and UD locations for anyone needing help with this.  The suit fitting will be at Pike Creek on October 7, and the suit fitting at UD will be Ocotber 15.

Swimmers in the National Program and Traditional Program will receive either two silicone DST caps or four latex DST caps as part of their registration fees associated with one of the National Program or Traditional Program groups.

More information on all of these team gear items will be discussed in the parents' meeting tomorrow, and will be sent out via email in the coming weeks.

Thanks,
The Delaware Swim Team coaching staff
