Storm Fall Invite Meet - Format Change Explanation
October 4, 2019
As many of you have likely noticed, we have published the meet events for our Fall Storm home meet. 13&Over swimmers will race in the morning and 12&Under swimmers in the afternoon.
I wanted to take a minute and explain the rationale behind adjusting the meet sessions from what the "normal" is within Minnesota Swimming.
Typically, 2 day, invite meets hold the same format: with 12&Under boys and 10&Under girls swimming in the morning and everyone else in the afternoon. This has been fine for many years, but we have seen a demographic change causing the morning sessions to be much smaller that the afternoon sessions. By moving all 12&Unders into the same session we hope to make each session similar in length.
We have also moved the 13&Over swimmers to the morning and 12&Under to the afternoon. This was done for 2 reasons. The first to allow our younger swimmers a chance to sleep in as sleep for that age group is extremely important. The second reason is to better prepare our older swimmers to perform well at prelim/finals meets. A prelim/finals meet typically has our older swimmers swimming in the morning and then again that night if they're fast enough to advance. We feel that never racing in the morning, until those meets, doesn't properly prepare them to race that early and we hope this can help.
Ultimately, this is a change and one we hope is well received. We'll be talking to the coaches and swimmers at the meet about it and listening to parent feedback as well. If it goes well, we might make the switch permanent for our home meets (other clubs are considering this change as well).
