Georgia Swimming Coaches
and Family We are a
very close family when it comes to Georgia Swimming and we always
do what is best to help those who have been dealing with extreme
medical issues or even personal loss. Well, one of our own has
been hit hard with a major loss to themselves.
As many of
you know, on August 26th Coach Melissa Wilborn from DeKalb Aquatics
suffered a severe fire at her home. Fortunately, Melissa was not
home at the time and is safe with no injuries. However, as you can
imagine it will take a considerable amount of time to handle
matters regarding her home, and she has needs for basic
necessities. In addition, she will be facing considerable time to
have the damage repaired and make her home livable again – up
to 6 months.
If you can give to help one of our own during this
time of need, it would be wonderful. I thank you and I am sure that
Coach Melissa would be extremely grateful too.

The AG State meet date was changed this year, due to facility
scheduling conflicts out of our control. This was discussed in the
Age Group committee meeting, and officially changed during Tech
Planning at our HOD meetings.
2019/2020 Age Group and
The 2020 Age Group State Cuts for SCY and Senior State LCM cuts
are available and posted on the website now! Additionally, the Age
Group Committee is still working on what the cuts for the
“JO” session will be, but they will be out with them as
soon as they are finalized. You can check out the cuts here.
COACH REQUIREMENTS – PLEASE PLAN
USADA Coaching Advantage Tutorial
Starting September 1, all coach members will be required to
complete an annual USADA Coaching Advantage Tutorial (CAT) course
by January 1, 2020. This 20-minute video course (presented in four
modules) was added following discussions with the Age Group
Anti-Doping Task Force and will be available on the LEARN platform,
covering WADA code, checking medications, the testing process and a
coach’s role in the clean sport movement. The latter is an
incredibly significant element of the training that is crucial at
all age levels. Renewal date for this course will be one year from
completion date. Please direct questions about the USADA Coaching
Advantage Tutorial to email@example.com.
Athlete Protection Training
In response to member feedback, beginning September 1, 2019, you
may notice the next time you log in that the three courses of the
Athlete Protection Training have been streamlined into one. The
training course continues to be produced by the U.S. Center for
SafeSport and must be completed annually with a renewal date one
year from the completion date. All adult athlete and non-athlete
members must complete this training. This includes coaches,
officials, Junior Coaches and anyone authorized to have regular
contact with or authority over a minor athlete. Please direct
questions about the Athlete Protection Training to firstname.lastname@example.org.
Concussion Protocol Training
This requirement is new for all coaches and officials in 2020.
Though several states have previously passed concussion education
requirements, USA Swimming will now require all coaches and
officials complete Concussion Protocol Training by January 1,
· Courses from the Center for Disease Control and Prevention
(CDC) or the National Federation of State High School
Associations (NFHS), as well as individual states’
required courses will satisfy the USA Swimming requirement. (For
example, if a coach lives/coaches in a state with a concussion
education requirement, he/she must only complete this requirement
and will not need to complete an additional course). Many high
school coaches will have already completed the NFHS training.
· For USA Swimming membership, coaches and officials must
successfully complete concussion and head injury education at least
once. Individual states may require annual or continuing education
and coaches/officials must abide by the requirements of their home
state or states in which they coach or officiate.
· This requirement is necessary to avoid personal liability
for concussion/head strike incidents, ensuring our insurers will
continue to provide liability insurance protection to USA Swimming,
coaches, officials and clubs.
· Please direct questions about Concussion Protocol
Training to George Ward at email@example.com.
ATHLETE TRANSFER FEES (NEW):
Beginning September 1st, there will be a $5.00 transfer
fee for each athlete transfer within the LSC. This fee will be
waived when accompanied by a renewal in the months of September
– December. The fee will also be waived if it has been more
than one year since the athlete was registered with USA Swimming.
There is no transfer fee for athletes coming to Georgia Swimming
from another LSC. There is no transfer fee for non-athlete
Star Swimmer Veronica Burchill
Hired as New GA Swim Intern
Great news GA Swimming - we have a new intern for the 2019-2020
swim year and we could not be more excited. Veronica Burchill will
be the new Media, Sponsorship, & Membership Engagement Intern,
and we believe she is going to add a lot to our team this year.
Here is a little bit about her:
"My name is Veronica Burchill and I am a senior at the
University of Georgia studying Human Development and Family Science
while also swimming for the university team. I’m originally
from Carmel, Indiana and I started swimming competitively for the
Carmel Swim Club at the age of 6. Since then I’ve had the
opportunity to represent the United States in a few international
competitions and represent UGA at 3 NCAA championships. I hope to
make a positive difference in people’s lives by one day
working for a non-profit organization and staying involved in the
swim-world in some capacity. I have a passion for helping others
and am excited to work with a group of people that positively
impact the lives of swimmers in the state of Georgia. I look
forward to giving back to the sport that has given me so many
incredible opportunities in my lifetime."
Let's give Veronica a very warm welcome!
