ASC Kicks Off with 4 Team Records

ASC improved 156 of 212 events for 74% best times with 28 new swims and only 9 DQ’s.  Checking the last few years reports our improvement rate is about the same, but our DQ’s are significantly lower.  We have written about “only” 25 or so DQ’s in past ASC kick off meets and this year we had 9.  We tried something new.  In the past, we tried to get everyone, including the newest swimmers, ready for all events.  This year you might notice the first timers swam mostly free or back events.  We haven’t done much with the other strokes yet, but the results have been good.  Our newer swimmers were much more prepared for the two or three events they raced.  We do promise to start working on the other strokes and prepare everyone for the IM, but some of these strokes come a bit slower for some.

Over the past few years our trend for a “normal” meet will be a bit lower than the percentage of best times recorded here.  It is a new season, some of the kids have grown and we hope over the past 6 weeks we have been getting them in better condition and with better technique.  We will continue to condition and train their technique, but it won’t be as easy to get best times every time.  In fact, comparing to converted long course times or some championship swims from the past summer, our best times percentage would be lower.  Since we normally train for the championship at the end of the year, this is normal.  On the positives, we looked good as a team top to bottom.  As our swimmers try new events and of course improve in all events, more new and best times will happen.  Judging from the other teams performances, they too will have positive reports from our meet.

It would be appropriate to thank all the helpers we had at this time for our meet.  Included in this were a few HS girls who took time from their season to help us out, so thanks to Peyton Mader, Emily and Katelyn Jadin and Jocelyn McNicoll.  Jackson Hodek also helped with getting especially the younger boys to their events in the morning session.  Also thanks to Mr. Teske whose invaluable help with the computer helps us run this meet.  Thanks to you all for putting on a fine first meet.

We have also been working on longer strokes with our more advanced groups and we have quite a few more swimmers now breaking 6 minutes in the 500 FR and breaking a minute in the 100 FR.  These are some nice benchmarks for any swimmer.  Erin Schuch, Anthony Hendrickson and Andrew Hodek broke 6 for the first time and Anthony and Maia Smet broke a minute.

Of course, this wouldn’t be a report without a record being broken, and Kate Schmoll took down 4 team records.  The 50 Fly was a 10 year old record, the 100 Fly and 100 BR were records she improved, and the 100 IM was a year-old record.  As these records are getting a bit harder, we might not always be reporting broken records as we might be used to.

We also have some new state cuts including Grant Seeling, who in his first meet qualified for the 12 & U Single Age state championships.  Talen Coppens also qualified in the same 25 Backstroke.  Barrett Van Laanen got new cuts in the 100 IM and 50 Fly, Nick Hodek and Tommy McNicoll got new 50 BK cuts as 11 year old swimmers.  Katelyn Seder got a new 50 FR cut and Kara Schmoll a new 100 IM cut.  This championship is a relatively new one in Wisconsin Swimming and we hope to have swimmers sign up for this meet this year.

There are other meets where qualifying times are required.  One is the Western Great Lakes Open in November, a prelim/final meet where we already have asked for commitments as it fills quickly.  Friday's prelims race Saturday and Saturday's prelims race Sunday.  They do Aussie Skins for senior 50 event finalists.  Maia Smet swam her 100 FR to a WGLO cut.

The Arena Challenge is another prelim/final meet in December which qualifying times are required.  Anthony Hendrickson and Andrew Hodek got their 50 and 100 FR cuts, Alex Smits the 500 FR, 100, 50 FR and 100 BR cuts, Madison Seder a new 100 FR cut, Maia Smet a new 500 FR, 100 Fly and 100 BK cut, Erin Schuch a new 500 FR cut.

Mid-States All Stars will be a January meet where if selected swimmers will represent Team Wisconsin against some of the best age group swimmers in the Midwest.  If invited, this would be a great honor.

In February the qualifying prelim/final meet right before our championship season is the A+ meet, and Alex earned the 500 FR cut, Kate Schmoll a new 100 BR cut.

Our championship season is in February and March and we will be compiling state qualifiers soon.  Regionals is February 21-23 in Fond du Lac, and is a "last chance" to qualify for the state championships.  Anyone can go, and it is the end of our regular season.  Those qualified may race at 12 & U State Feb 28-March 1 or 13 & Over State March 5-8.  Those qualifying for Senior Sectionals would race March 12-15.
